So I'm looking for a field cap to use (preferable not a side cap) because on top of the triple digit temperatures, the sun and the weight, the stahlhelm just gets to danged hot and heavy. I was considering getting a field cap to go with my uniform (circa 1941/2 war east front or west front) but my main concerns were, how often were they distributed, who got them, style, type, and so fourth, but my biggest turn off is I associate wearing the hat rather than a helmet as a late war idea, when Germany didn't have the industrial complex to give everyone a helmet, so I tag wearing the hats with Volks units or the more poorly equipped ones (and don't get me wrong, I'm sure Germany had their fair share). Here is what I had in mind, how is it along the lines of period authenticity and uniform correction, and perhaps disparage my volksturm myth? hikishop.net/wwii-german-wh-wool-field-cap-em-p-241.html?zenid=m79mgkoa3dvmqb6m81g1vpd414(and I like hiki-shop, get off my case!) Oh and I'm running a sorta ambiguous Wehrmacht troop, a squad leader, to be precise, so that eliminates all SS and LW hats as well.

Everyone had a field cap as far as I know. They weren't generally used in combat though. I really don't understand why people think helmets are heavy. I really have never noticed mine being heavy before.

I agree! Helmets are quite comfy(mine is just 10000 sizes too big)

Well in the field I don't notice the weight (I have far more important things to pat attention to, until I get shot then you may as well be standing in the liberty bell during a hail storm) but walking about I'd like to have something else. Maybe I'll settle for a helmet strap

What you are referring too is the M43 cap. No good for your impression as clearly they dont come into service until halfway through 1943 You'll need a side cap for a 41-42 impression. "I was considering getting a field cap to go with my uniform (circa 1941/2 war east front or west front)" There was no western front during those years... that was the whole point of D-day to open up a second front As said by others, everyone was issued a helmet, you were more likely to be missing a soft hat as they were not considered essential.
