I've been lurking for about two weeks and finally decided to join. I really didn't want to make a new thread for this, but I wanted to resurrect a months- (or years-) old thread less. I've been collecting WWII American for a few years, USMC for a few months. Unfortunately, ATF sold out of their P41s (luckily I picked up a set of P42s before they sold out as well) and I was wondering just how much of a cardinal sin it would be for a Marine to wear Army HBTs? www.sspx.org/Seasonal/holy_thursday_priesthood/priest_gives_communion_during_iwo_jima.jpgThe Marine receiving communion here is wearing Army trousers, but this is the most I've seen of such a thing. Plus, I'm doing '43-'45 1st Marine Division and Iwo Jima is out of my concern. And if a Marine in the First Marine Division wearing Army HBTs is completely out of the question, where can I get cheap P41s? (I've already looked at WWII Impressions; they're a little pricey.)

In the reenacting world, most would consider it to be a sin. But the way I see it is it was done, it can and SHOULD be replicated. Especially during living history events, I believe in showing the public what the war really looked like (as close as you can get to it) instead of this fantasy world most reenactors live in. Marines used anything that they could get their hands on that would be of use to them by any means necessary.

As bloodandguts said, the Marine Corps used EVERYTHING they could get. I haven't seen many Marines wearing later pattern Army HBTs, but I wouldn't rule it out as impossible.
Even recently, I've seen a photo of a Marine wearing MARPAT pants and an ACU jacket. Blasphemy? Yes. Did it happen? Yes.

Well, I don't do Living History or anything that would require absolute perfection, so I guess I'll have to pick up a pair of Army HBT trousers at some point. One more question: how were the P42's worn? Were they ever worn so that the colors didn't match? Like the shirt green side out with the trousers brown side out? Probably approaching farb territory with that one, eh?

42s were worn in any combination, top green bottom brown helmet green out, top brown bottom green helmet uncovered, etc.. It was all up to the individual Marine really.

And I will say this though regarding my first reply, if you were doing a display and were wearing something in a truly unique fashion, make sure to provide information/pictures to back up your reasoning and explain that it was a one of a kind thing and not the norm. Same with wearing the army uniform pieces, explain why they are being worn, whether you "acquired" them or that's what the qm had on hand at the moment due to supply issues.

Right. I understand that the Marines were generally at the bottom of the food chain for new gear, usually, and that they used whatever they had on hand. I just wanted to make sure I wasn't being a turbo-farb. Last question: which combat pack would be most appropriate for '43-'45? Haversack or 782 pack? I assume the 782 pack. That's most, if not all, the questions I have. If anybody else has questions, I think it'd be nice to keep this thread open for them.

Just an FYI, "782" refers to DD Form 782 used by the Marine Corps to track issued gear.

That first link is very nice. I appreciate the guy's setup almost as much as the original photo he was trying to recreate. Oh, how I wish I could afford WWII Impression's P41's...

First link: WWII Impressions P42 Jacket and P41 Pants. Second link: WWII Impressions P41 Jacket and ATF P41 Pants.
WWII Impression P41s are very well made and will last a long time. If you want to stay with USMC reenacting/airsoft it is worth saving for those.

When doing marine and using army fatigues you just need to get the battle right. Some battles and Divisions had mixtures of stuff. Others were pretty straight forward USMC only gear. General rule of thumb is, if it is a divisional first battle (i.e. the division has just been deployed they will have the USMC gear only.) If the division has been in theatre for a while and seen multiple deployments then there will be a mix. The most notable of this is 1st division being pushed to Cape Glouchester immediately following their return from Guadalcanal. You see a mixture of camp, P41s, army and even some USN gear as they try to grab anything that works so they can get back out in the field.

I got my P41 unifom (jacket + trousers) from Spearhead Militaria. From their eBay page, actually. I personally really like them an would recommend them. They aren't too pricey, and they're pretty decent. Just do an eBay search of 'USMC P41' and you should find them.

The only advice I''ll throw in is, in the norm in Bougainville, New Georgia, Choisuel, and other Solomon Island chains, rain forest and thick jungle, so, as we called it in the Corps, green side out. For the Gilbert's , Marianas and other central pacifists, brownside out.
