Not bad for completely hand made! I find it impossible to sew. ( tried once, went terribly wrong making a cap.)

thanks! this is much better than my first, which I posted 2 days ago. I think my machine was telling me to take a break. I only took 1 break tht was longer than half an hour, and broke a needle in the process:D

Nice job Lssh1944,
I have hand stitched five German field caps in my day, four wool and one tropical, plus many other alterations. I sold all except for one, and I can sympathize about it being a pain in the rear. I have gone through a pile of needles, and multiple finger pricks, long story short my hands had enough. So, I decided to put my stitching/mending skills to a good use. Many vendors sell items that are stitched and assembled in a mediocre fashion. Many miss the fine details, so that is were good sewing skills come in handy. Keep up the good work...but I'd focus on refurbishment over re-inventing the wheel, and you will save many needles and tons of money. Heia Safari, Kamerad!

I started for the same reasons, not to sell but just for fun. You must have missed my initial point...So I'll be frank. I have been in this hobby for over twenty years...
No one needs a crusher cap, first and for-most. Second, your sewing skills are mediocre at best, even using a sewing machine. Consider what it took to assemble a peak cap in the slave labor camps and you might be on to something. Like I said, nice job but focus your skills on something more substantial.

"might be on to something" on to what!? Correct, noone needs a crusher, and I dont plan on using it in reenactment, but I did it for the f-u-n, fun. Correct, my sewing skills are mediocore at best, this is my second time using a machine, as I said. "focus your skills on something more substantial." like what? putting insignias onto a bloody tunic? I already have the ability to do that. redoing repro crushers is a waste, since helf of them dont even use quality materials or any of the original german hat making methods, and have plastic, cheap fake leather bills, etc.

I think what he means, could be wrong, is start off on something more simple. A crusher, like you have learned, is no easy task to make. That's one of the reasons they were only on special order for troops. It was much easier to assemble peaked caps. I started out sewing by picking out a simple canvas mosin pouch. Once I got used to that I moved on to converting a shirt into a Russian tunic. I found it to be much easier now that I knew what the machine would do. By moving up the line like that I was able to make a fairly good looking Russian uniform for a little less than $40 that I intend to use for rental. It was fun and I am very satisfied with the results. Best part is I haven't broken a needle yet! ;D

BTW, br broken needles, I mean broken needles on the machine. "It was much easier to assemble peaked caps" So, its easier to assemble a stiffened visor, with a vulcanfiber bill? I highly doubt it.

Yikes, big mistake! Sorry, I meant to say the field cap, not peaked cap, I'm getting my hats mixed up here. haha If you want another project and want to give a field cap a go, here is a site I found that has patterns for a m43. oym.org/oymr/m43howto/0.html He even has a video that shows how he did it step by step: www.youtube.com/watch?v=jk2_DavxeBg I'd be very interested to see how it turned out if you give it a go

Ah, I thought so I have seen that, was posted on Axis History Forum a while ago. I have also made my own Bergmuetze patyterns, and will try those out today:) I just love making crushers, though. and I keep getting better with every try.

As paul said, crushers are pretty much not used unless you're a nco/officer but I wish I could learn to stitch again, I want to stitch my own field or overseas cap, saves me a few bucks xD I want to find my cap I made to show you, it's a mess lol I went through literally about 30 to 50 needles, (I hand stitched, no machines )

Paul Rech makes great hats. I own two of them and I think I paid ten bucks for one and nothing for the other. In fact, I may have offered the money and gotten both for nothing... I don't remember. He may think he sold them but in reality he just gave them to me so his primary motive is definitely not to make money. Communication over the internet is a tricky thing and when lssah1944 commented, "and I don't do this to sell them, or make money," I think he hit a nerve. It sounds like a flippant response to an initial post that was supportive and complimentary.
There are a few people on these boards who rise head and shoulders above the masses when it comes to knowledge about the WW2 era and the hobby in general. Adler, 2nd Batt, Gryphon, and Ersatzjack all come to mind. Paul Rech is in their ranks and instead of being flippant to one of his compliments you should have probably just been gracious.

Alright, I apologize. I undertsnad crushers arent necessary, however, they are simply fun to make, which is why I do it. Btw, anyone, post your homemade hats in this thread!

My home made Paul Rech is on my head in my avatar. Sorry it isn't a better picture. The tropical hat that Paul made for me is really nice too. I just don't have a picture of it yet.
