Were the M42 trousers made to be worn over the M1937 wool trousers? I'm wearing a belt and I'm still drowning in size 30s...

They were designed like that. You will have trouble holding them up with a belt, so grab some suspenders. Just make sure you adjust them so the top of the pants meet your belly button, if you don't, you may end up blowing out the crotch stitching.

They were designed to be baggy, or to be worn over wool trousers? Guess I'll get some suspenders then...

Indeed the design was to wear them as an outer cover for the wool pants and shirt. When you see originals and factor that in you realize how skinny these folks were. In normandy and in holland most paratroopers jumped with their wools on underneath. It is quite cold in a C-47 with an open jump door even at 10,000 feet in the Summer. Imagine you were going to function for a week to 10 days out doors and you start to realize why wools and a tucked away wool sweater made sense. Suspenders continue to be issued for field pants and when you further consider your trouser pockets full of c-rats, and handgrenades you begin to see why.
Paratroopers by design were intended to start out every fight fully surrounded. GERONIMO! Airborne Infantry. How Far? ALL THE WAY!!!!!!
