I just returned from this film which was released yesterday. It chonicals the life of a man known as the father of the computer and the man most responsible for Englands intelligence coup of breaking the "unbreakable " INIGMA Code. It is an amazing story, well told and brilliantly acted. I believe it will be nominated for and will win picture of the year.
My father spent much of the war at Bletchy Park which was the setting for most of the film. It was cool seeing so many shots of his duty station. The main structure was where SHAEF was housed and Eisenhower kept his office. My father was a courier who worked directly for Eisenhower throughout the war. The encryptian group was there as well although they operated out of huts on the property. The intercept crews were in the basement. My father knew many of the secrets of the war but was NOT aware of ULTRA although he had his suspicions.
ULTRA and the breaking of the code remained a closely guarded secret until well into the 60s.
the film is mostly a character study rather than a war movie persay but it provides very accurate details into one of the most vital reasons for our sucess against the AXIS. Ironically Mr Turing committed suicide for reasons that will unfold in the movie but the movie does not reveal that he poisoned himself with a cyanide laced apple and the image of a bitten into apple became an iconic image for a major computing company and this is no coincidence.
