Hey everyone!! I'm new to these forums, and I need to ask a favor of anyone who can help. I went to a local surplus shop in Alexandria VA today (called Full Metal Jacket for anyone wondering) and I picked up a vintage M-1942 CRS canteen with cup (cover included), a vintage first aid pouch with a sealed first aid kit, and a vintage British made camo net. I need help figuring out how to fit the net onto my M1 helmet (swivel bale front seam in case that changes how you put it on). So, if anyone can tell me how to fit the 1/4" net onto an M1 helmet, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks!

I don't know about the British made nets, but the American nets have like a drawstring around the edge. It's the same material as the net, so it's not obvious unless you pull on it. I haven't figured out any way to put the net on other than putting the helmet down on the center of the net, pulling the sides up and pulling on the drawstring until the net is over the edge of the helmet all the way around, then shoving the helmet liner in place. It helps if you have extra hands.
Something I've done before, tie string to the edges of the net and run it to the net on the opposite side of the helmet, so they're criss-crossing over the open side of the helmet, then tighten them up to pull the net over the edge of the helmet.

Prior to fitting the net over the steel pot heat it almost to a boil so it will stretch and shape to your helmet securing the slight overlap into place with the liner. There were instruction to that effect on some WW2 Unissued nets that I once had.

I'm just confused about how I am going to get the bales through the 1/4" netting. I have already tried a few times to figure out how that will happen, but i couldn't figure that out.

Good question. I just went around them. I don't know if that's right.

If this is a British helmet net, it might have more material than a US net, since it has to go over the Brody, or dishpan, British helmet with the rim all the way around. I'd say once you get it pretty much where you want it, just snip a couple threads to allow the bales to go through it. I would guess that the individual soldier probably put them on any way that worked.

Typically you'll cut into the net a slot to fit the bale through. The upside is whatever you do, neat, sloppy or just plain off will be precisely as it would have been as these kinds of things were done by humans, some with precise guidance and some with none at all. Military vehicles markings on restored vehicles are often crisply applied and perfect when an accurate depiction would more correctly depict work done by a hung over, probably miscreant eight ball who was sent down to apply them as punishment for some misdeed and in pictures it's obvious that this was the case. Even the factory applied markings we're done in a Wartime footing of haste and expediency.

So, I've been able to get the net in, but now it seems as if my liner just doesn't want to go back in. The liner, with the net in, protrudes about 3/4 of an inch to 1 1/2 an inch depending on where it is.

Backing up a couple steps, this is a British net. It's designed for a different shape helmet that doesn't use an American style liner. It's possible it's not going to fit right. I found a YouTube video on fitting the helmet net. This guy's got it figured out. www.youtube.com/watch?v=f-wXPgrGnMw
