First off I want to thank everyone who made it out for this event. With each event, attendance seems to be growing. For this one, we had 11 Germans and 10 U.S. We had several walk ups and several friends of friends came down. Very happy by the momentum we have going.
10:00hrs. Mission and safety briefings were held. Germans moved out and set up their defenses in the town of Remagen. Wired the Ludendorff bridge with explosives.
10:30hrs. U.S. forces moved out and set up a field camp at the GI base.
Mission objectives and game parameters: The Germans could only defend the town from within the town and it's immediate outskirts. Since there was a fictitious river, the Germans were not allowed to cross the U.S. occupied side of the Rhine River, unless they went over the Bridge.
U.S forces were faced with a more daunting task. With the same rules, the Rhine river was separating them from town of Remagen. Their objective is to disarm the bridge before the Germans blow it, cross it and take the town. The GI's could forge across the river, but a frontal assault and advance is all they could do. U.S. forces could lay down covering fire from the Kafir road, but could not advance into the town from that flank.
11:00hrs: GAME ON. Lt. Kip and 1st Sgt. Migs moved out two squads of 5. First squad fire team took position by the big rock on the Kafir road and laid down suppressing fire on the town while the assault team advanced on the Bridge.
The AO terrain was just as treacherous as the Germans. Ground conditions were snow, ice, mud and water. Footing was slippery and slow. There was also very little cover that the assault team could find. Another SNAFU for the GI's was their Bazzokas. Both of our two Bazzoka's failed to work. With no artillery, the GI's had no choice. Wave after wave of assault men tried to advance on the Bridge, but they were repelled by two German MG's and sniper fire. The GI fire team did take out a number of Germans within the town, but their efforts were for naught as the assault team could not achieve their objective.
After about two hours of fighting, the Germans blew the Bridge in a spectacular explosion of fireworks and smoke bombs. (Fireworks were detonated in a safe location) It was not determined if any GI's were indeed on the Bridge at time of detonation.
13:30hrs. Cease fire called. Time to recoup, reload and hydrate.
14:00hrs. GAME ON. Same mission objectives, but this time, GI's can advance into town from Kafir road.
With these new rules in place, Squads of GI's applied constant pressure on the Town with grenades and covering fire. After about 45 minutes of heavy fighting, the GI's did manage to kill all but one German in the town. This lone German (AJ) survived several assaults and one botched grenade toss by Lt.Kip until his comrades could re-enforced the town. U.S forces did take the Bridge for a short time, but the lone German survivor saved the day for the Wehrmacht.
16:00hrs. Cease fire.
All in all, a great and tiring day of fighting. I'm happy to say that everyone had a great time and we are all looking forward to the next one.
Pictures will follow soon. Hopefully on this thread AND on the facebook page.
