I've been keeping an eye out for a cheap stand in for the M43 Field Jacket. There were some Austrian jackets that were close, except for patches of Velcro a few years back, but the price has gone up on those when they're available. Sportsmans Guide has been carrying what they call a Greek M65 field jacket. Right now they're on sale for a little over $20, so I bought one. They're actually closer to the M43 than the M65. The color is a little greener shade than the M43. They have both button and zipper closure. The original M43 was button only, later adding the zipper. Pockets are button rather than snaps. The Greek buttons are similar to US but a darker color. The most noticeable difference at first glance is the strap adjustment on the sleeves above the wrist rather than the cuff at the end of the sleeve. I think that might be alterable without too much trouble. Size (they only have medium and large) runs a bit small. Comes with a button on hood like the M43. For loaner gear I think it's adequate and a lot cheaper than a repro M43. Repro M43 on the left, Greek "M65" on the right.

Looks pretty close except for the couple of things you mentioned. Would definitely make for good loaner gear, and the stuff on Sportsmans Guide is usually decently cheap.

I modified a sleeve to make it look a little closer to the M43. Not difficult, but the thickness of the material was about the limit my cheap sewing machine would handle.

The movement of the cuff really mAkes big difference. Actual M43s have gotten nearly as expensive as actual M41s it seems.
