El Guettar was Pattons first widely published success in WW2. While he lead the Landings in North Africa and was responsible for training the 2nd Armored Division the US public knew little about him. Under the leadership (imfamously his lack of leadership) Pattons predecessor at II Corp, Major General Freddendahl had suffered a horrible defeat at Kasserine Pass at the hands of Rommel. Investigations revealed that Freddendahl kept a headquarters in a reinforced bunker hundreds of miles from the front and was clueless about how ill prepared his units were to oppose the vaunted Africa Corp. Patton was sent to take over and as depicted in the movie "Patton" he quickly restored a sense of order and discipline. 5 days into his command Intelligence via code breaking and conventional intelligence gathering determined where Rommel was likely to strike and Patton deployed his corp to essentially ambush them at El Guettar. Rommel was not present for the battle suffering from a skin disorder that may have been shingles. The US victory was significant and created a sense of confidence that would be built upon in later actions. Amazingly Freddendahl was promoted to Lt General and given a training position stateside. The Africa Uniform was cool. I especially like their desert boots. The US uniform has always been bland by comparison but from a comfort position far superior. The impression in the two films are fabulous. It looks like it was probably fipmed in California. A nice stand in for Tunisia.
