FG 42 opinions needed.

I bought a Shoei FG-42 model gun a while ago thinking of making it my next custom project. Well I've spent a lot of time considering how exactly to go about making it into an AEG but no matter how you slice it, there isn't much room for all the internals.

The only place even remotely big enough for the Gear box is in the butt stock and it would require building a butt stock from scratch since the shoei one is a solid casting, I would have to expand some of the dimensions just a little. It would also require extensive gearbox modification. Then there is very little room for a battery in the fore grip. and last is the side mounted box magazine, I have tackled this problem before with the sten guns but it means you are limited to low or mid caps and the FG-42 mags are $100+ each!!! so I won't have very many.

The other options are to go with gas (not my top choice) or make it into a Sniper type springer (maybe based on an APS2 or VSR-10) The real weapon is capable of full or semi auto but was frequently used in the sniper role, I have read that full auto performance was terrible with the FG-42's due to the massive recoil and would often damage the weapon.

So my question is: Would it be a total let down to have an FG-42 that was basically a bolt action springer?

WWIIGUNS.com shows a FG-42 AEG for $990. Says it uses a Version II gearbox and is made from mostly plastic. There isn't much info and the picture appears to be of a Shoei. I know they are a known scam but does anyone know anything more about it?

i'm sorry to say, but a gas system does seem to be the least expensive and time consuming route here. my reasons: you won't have to make a new stock and you don't have to frankenstein the original model too much.

Im gona have to go with a gas system too, the springer idea sounds nice and realy would be simple especially if you just plan to use it for sniping, but if your lugging that thing around all day long you better have the option of just blasting the hell out of someone , plus since its kinda ungangly it would be benificial to have a full auto option if you get in a bind.

now the later version fg42 has a vertical grip, that would make room for a motor...

Shoei turned the Escort internals project downa long time ago (after the MP44 was done i belive), so i won't put my money on that.

well i might not know much about costom guns and if this it total nonsence please ignore it, but why not build a gear box into the gun, like remove the metal gear box it self and modify the inside of the gun to accept the gear box parts. or you could shave off some of the gear box and reinforce it with something and thats my 2 cents

Thanks for all the input. I'm not feeling much love for the sniper/springer idea so I'll probably go with AEG. I need to get my hands on an M-14 gearbox and see if that might work out for it, otherwise it's going to be one tough nut to crack. oh... and cairo1 your idea isn't completely crazy but machining out the reciever to house the gears would be extremely difficult if not virtually impossible.

Wow that's very cool. I haven't done anything with this project yet. Still hopeing to get a look at a M-14 gearbox sometime to see if it can be adapted. CO2 would be very unique.

Just ask! I'll bring you by a M-14 to dink around with. I usually have alot of them around. I just got in some of the Chinese knock offs as well. They typically need to be shimmed and relubed but are virtually clones of the Maruis.

Maybe a BV unit would fit? and you could get real steel (if they fit) or shoei mags and fool around with them to make them work.

Have you looked at the mech box in the L85's? May fit closer to what your looking for. It may be a Star box but my L85 was solid and didn't let me down, I took it to OP Irene this year and had a great time with it. Easy to change out the spring and nice tight package.
