My entire kit was about 80 bucks. The best part about Vietnam stuff is that it is easy to find at flea markets and such. Just look around, haggle, barter, and trade until you get what you want. My 3rd pattern fatigues were like 35 My webgear was maybe 40 and the rest was spent on other accesories like bandoleers.

I agree with Nimlas. By consistently going to Value Village and Goodwill stores as well as gun shows and the occassional garage sale. I've managed to accumulate roughly six complete Line doggie impressions from the Vietnam war. fatigues, M-56 sets even proper boots in some cases. it's way cheaper if you know what you're looking for. If you're impatient or have a pending event Moore Militaria is a great source or if you need to fill in for items you can't find.
It seems a full set of M-56 is in the $50.00 range these days and provided you're small or skinny 2nd pattern or 3rd pattern jungle fatigues are generally around and can be bought in good shape for under $35.00 ERTLs are about the same with pants some what harder to find then jackets as they tended to be worn until they wore out. Add a soft cap or steel pot and a OD neck towel along with a bandoleer for yuks and giggles and you're there. Hence you're looking pretty darn good for around $100.00
If you're large, new made and hence expensive is probably your only option.

I managed to get all my loaned out kit back from the RECONDO school and have some redundant set ups. I may want to sell one or two fairly complete impressions. I'm not interested in parting any out piece meal. The impressions would inclue a OD jacket and pants along with an OD ball cap or field cap. It would also include a set of M-56 web gear complete with web belt, suspenders (cotton canvas or nylon late war) , two cotton canvas M-56 ammo pouches (M-14 size) a first aid/ compass pouch (Cotton canvas) and a butt pack (cotton canvas) along with a canteen cover (Nylon) and plastic canteen. I have some choices of available sizes but nothing real large and certainly nothing in HUGE sizes. $100.00 plus shipping for each set up. I have two to sell as I decided I only want to keep four loaner sets not six. PM me if interested.
Add your own jungle boots, OD towel, steel pot, bandoleer and you're pretty much there. The uniforms are faded but not torn or stained. They may or may not have patches depending on size. None have rank insignia on the sleave.

One complete set is now spoken for with one complete set still available. Your choice in sizes is a Large regular or a Medium regular. (waist sizes 31-35 or 34-38) These are reasonable fits for folks 5'6" to 5"10 or so. In either direction you'd want either a SHORT or a LONG. Unless of course you plan on wearing them with sleaves rolled up which frankly is authentic.
I also have some very good NVA uniforms complete with Sun Helmet, shirt, pants rice roll, collar insignia and long camo scarf. Add your own banta booties, AK-47 and chest rig and you're all set to go. Sizes are all over the map. (I have 30 available!) Your price would be $65.00 plus shipping. PM me if interested. You could specify sizes and enlisted rank for the NVA uniform. These are all cotton, vat dyed (faded OD) reasonably authentic impressions.

I'm not a business here. I just had a couple spare sets of Vn impressions over and above what I needed as loaners. Both my spare US sets are now spoken for. I do still have 3 redundant NVA impressions (Your choice of shirt and pants sizes) They include sun helmet with beer can emblem, In the correct VN war era color. long sapper style camo scarf, two pocket shirt with collar insignia, trousers and a rice roll all in the VN era faded OD. Not the current dark green or the old pre-65 khaki.

Here is a sample of the NVA uniform Note the faded OD shade which is correct for post 1965. Collar tabs denote a private. Pith helmet has a net and plastic garnish affixed. The costume does not include the chest rig, AK 47 or banta booties but does include the camo silk scarf and a faded OD rice roll (not shown)

I keep getting PMs asking about US M-56 set ups. I appreciate your interest but as mentioned in the thread above. I sold all the redundant US set ups I had and want to hang onto what I've kept for future local events. All I have in VN impression stuff that is surplus to me is NVA impression stuff. I want to keep about 20 sets (not the 30 that I have)

The standard US Army ruck. This OD nylon pack was actually based on the NVA cotton canvas design but larger. It featured 3 pouch pockets on the outside (like the NVA ruck sack) and a rubberized interior pouch. It could be used with or without the frame but was of course far more comfortable with the frame. One of the coolest features which most reenactors and even alot of GIs didn't know is it has a clever quick release dump shoulder strap that can instantly drop the pack. It came in various sizes of small and medium during the war years and now is offered in a large configuration as well. The post war designs are virtually identical visually but if you find war dates you're of course spot on. I humped a "Ruck" for many a year and my worn out knees unfortunately tell the take. (one has been replaced with a bionic design and the other will no doubt be replaced in the next few years)
Someone told me war year rucks are getting hard to find. It's hard for me to relate to the notion that my period of service is now considered ancient history.

There were two standard issue packs. The tropical rucksack and the lightweight ruck sack. The lightweights can run from $100-300 while the tropicals are usually around $100-200. They are sometimes hard to come by. I personally use a medium ALICE pack which like 2nd Bat said is nearly identical to the tropical rucksacks. A lot of times during the war NVA and ARVN packs were used by US troops as they were lighter and still could hold plenty of gear.

Here is an actual period picture of a Vietnam US ruck as set up for a LRRP mission It is a small field ruck. Note the XM-177 with a 20 round aluminum colored magazine. (Common for the time) No sling on the rifle which were removed while on patrol or if a sling was used at all a simple boot lace was used. All the sling swivels have been taped extensively to cut down on noise. LRRPs often had 30 round mags (but not always) The ruck sack has the usual taped on baseball M26 grenades and smoke grenades and caribiner (Snap link) The web gear is a mixture of canvas M56 and nylon. The two, two quart canteens were fairly commonly attached in place of a butt pack. The regular canteen pouches are actually set up to hold magazines. The loose baseball grenade is troubeling. Note the muzzle suppressor has been completely taped over using OD cloth tape. This was very commonly done, it will prevent water, dust and crud from getting in the weapon during the patrol and if compromised it sure isn't going to impede the rounds from getting out!
