The existence of a cheap mech box for a conventional non pistol grip stock in the form of the M-14s are now available. Marui, G&G, Tim Chan custom, Star and now Double eagle have caused me to look at various common military weapons not previously available or practical for adaptaion to an AEG. The BAR, Gew 43, are the obvious WW2 guns that come to mind. Unfortunately the base hardware for both those guns is so expensive as to make the initial outlay outside my budget. In another period altogether (Nam Softing) which I also enjoy (i wonder why?) a weapon that I've always been intrigued with is the Soviet/ Chinese SKS. It was occassionally seen in use by the NVA (PAVN) and in the case of formalized VC much more common then AK-47s. I always loved the folding spike bayonet and the short magazine along with the mean stubby look of the weapon itself. They were fun to shoot and the good news in terms of a replica they are both widely available very, very, cheap to buy. Whole functional guns are $250.00 to $300.00 at gun shows and the bodies and hardware less receiever group are $65.00 with the folding bayonet.
I'm thinking there is the potential for a custom AEG in the $600.00 range with build costs of around $350.00 in materials. I know I'm interested enough to build a couple for myself if it's practical.

haha sounds good 2nd! Pretty good price range too. Sadly I am doing a late US impression, so the only thing I will be touching is a m16 or a car-15/xm177. You should make them and post this on incountry.ca/icforums, there is a few NVA/VC guys on there that would love that. It's better than the bolt action spring shell SKS that is soon to be released. Also think about this, it is a good retail gun to NVA/VC at your next Recondo School event!

I'm actually thinking in terms of the RECONDO school primarily making them to supplement the AKs I bought for use by the VC NVA Role players that serve as the OPFOR at the Course. A few SKSs would be a nice enhancement. You're right InCountry and other nam specific sites is the right place to promote it once done. (If I get them done)

I'd be down for a SKS aeg, I even have an SKS stock I bought at a gun show back in March for $10 so you wouldn't have to go look for one if I went through with it.

The whole parts kit for a SKS (Everything but the receiever group and bolt) are around $60.00 so not a lot of money. That includes the stock, the stock hardware the barrel the folding bayonet and everything. Since the receiver group is very simple and straight forward it shouldn't be too hard to fabricate. The challenge is the thickness of the stock. In looking at it it's going to be a very tight drill out for the mech box leaving thin walls on the stock. Precise dremel work is very time consuming and hard. Lots of fine dust I'm afraid. probably not worth the effort.

Pitty as it was always a cool rifle. Maybe taking a look at it later with a fresh mind and new set of eyes one might figure a way around that. Schmitty has offered that advice to me on seperate occassions and it has worked several times. Who knows.
