it is also 6/6/06 (I'm sure you're all aware of), but yes, today's the anniversary of the greatest anphibious mission ever attempted. I salute the soldiers that fought during that battle.

Man time flies. Seems like yesterday it was the 40th Anniversary. And hard to believe 12 years ago was the big D-Day reenactment at Montrose Harbor in CHicago. Pretty soon reenactors will be the only ones telling D-Day stories. We're loosing WWII vets fast! If you know one...talk to them and thank them.

Seems we would owe some to the vets of the Revolution, War of 1812, so forth so on...since the vets of WW2 or otherwise wouldn't have had a country to fight for....I don't know any of them they are all long dead but oweing a debt of gratitude is oweing....just a thought.

Dan, Obviously I honor all veterans
I don’t hate Civil war vets, WW1 guys are cool with me, Rev war, I think the colonial system wasn’t nearly bad as they made it out to be, but, 240 years ago now, Im not going to loose sleep on it.
I’m just kinda surprized that you turned a nice post about remembering the D-day vets into a pissy grammar checking argument.
very discouraging.
Just so you know, I work with veterans every day, I've worked on cases with the VA, Ive set up housing and jobs for homeless vets. This was not making a phone call. this was getting my hands dirty literally getting people off the streets and dragging them to public housing hearings, writing letters of recommendations, teaching them how to use computers and cash registers.
I have 11 years of volunteer involvement with the Military museum, I've hosted VFW meetings, where I catered the food, raised the flags, gave complimentary tours, did everything until the meeting was called to order, because that's when only post members are allowed in the room, and I had to wait in another room, after 2 or 3 hours I came out and cleaned up.
I spent my vacation, driving a Vet I had just met to the hospital, because he was too sick to drive and his lungs were failing, He landed in the 2nd wave Omaha beach on D-day and I felt there was no smurfing way I was going to make this guy get a taxi while I was around, I felt it was a travesty, that he did so much for us, and now he was supposed to drag his oxygen tank out to his car, and somehow make it to the hospital. He passed on 2 months later, but I like to think I made a difference there.
Thanks for your thoughts Dan, please don't take this as a flame, or a rant, Im just trying to explain myself, since you seemed to have a problem with what I wrote. So long as you read this post, You may by all means continue to educate me on honoring vets. I just wanted you to know these minor details, before you went on. -Gordak

The problem with the internet is that half the time you can't really tell the intent behind a post. I was trying to clarify what I had said to begin with which was simply an addendum to what others were saying we honor those of the WW2 and after, and before. That was all Gordy. I was trying to add to the remembering not dog people out. I still don't see how it was read that way.

There were some nice rembrance services all over Normandy, in the American sectors as well as in the English/Canadian sectors. There was also some battle reenactment, including the capture of the battery of Crisbeques and the fight for Ste-Mère-Eglise. There's smoke coming out of their guns when firing, any idea what kind of guns those are ?
Allthough there were some festivities for the Americans, it was not that much compared to the British (that's only each 5 years -- allthough there were some (current) Rangers in Ste-Mère-Eglise). I saw only a few American veterans but there were quite a lot of veterans from the UK, both in Arromanches (with the famous Mulberry) and at Ranville (Pegasus Bridge) and Merville (the battery).
btw. Wonderful weather as well ;-)
