Yeah, I've studied this a bit. If you were diagnosed prior to your twelfth birthday, and show no current asthmatic behaviors, they can scoot you in. Also, I've got flat feet. They will take you if you meet their requirements by the degree to which your feet are impaired. If you're enough of a go-getter, or you get a waiver, you're gonna be good to go.
As for me, I'm gonna be going up to Cal Maritime in August. From there, it's the US Coast Guard.

Well for asthmatic behaviors, I have to take my inhaler before hockey, and I still end up wheezing half the time. (I was diagnosed when I was like, 5)

I served in the USAF and then with the Air Natl Guard after high school and while I was in college. I am proud of my service and the Air Force was more like a regular civvy job than the 'real' military.
However, having said that I greatly admire and am very worried for the troops coming up today in the US Army or Marines, or any other branch for that matter. I served during the '80's so there was no real war going on then, being a parent of a teenager I am concerned about Bush's war still going on and Iraq being a very dangerous place for a young man.
My advice would be similar to the other old 'vets' here- military service is one of the most important and patriotic things a man can do, other than voting which is more useful, and is an essential way to pay back- I would say that the best way to serve is as an officer though, so either through ROTC or with a college degree. Most of us will work the majority of our careers in the 'private sector' and the training and experience you gain as an officer in the military can set you up very well for a good job after your service.
Slainte!

I'm not a dumb person, I got all A's and B's in high school, but I'm doing what many people consider dumb. It probably is dumb, but I wanted to do things this way. I tried college, didn't like it and dropped out. Now I'm enlisted as an E-1 in the Army National Guard as a Forward Observer in a Cavalry unit. Was it a smart thing to do in terms of longevity? I'd say no, but it's what I wanted to do.
Do what makes you happy, but make sure it's the right decision. It took me a year to decide on this to make sure it's what I wanted. That's all I'm trying to say.
