This came to mind after I read the thread about the ASVAB test. Isanyone planning on serving in the military upon graduation? Or have you previously served or are you serveing?
Personaly I plan on joining the Marines when I get out of high school.

Reserve Officer Training Corp. Conducted simultaneous to your college education. You take Military History, leadership courses, Drill and PT while attending college and do drill and FTXs on occassional weekends with Summer Camps Between your Sophmore and Junior and again between your Junior and Senior Years. At the conclusion you receive a Reserve or Regular Army commission as a Second Lt. It is the most prolific means by which the military gets it's commissioned officers. The others being the academies and Officers Candidate School which commissions deserving applicants from the enlisted ranks. I had a four year scholarship back in the 60s which ultimately led to my commission. I have assisted several local airsofters in applying for and receiving ROTC scholarships which is a marvelous way to get your schooling paid for.
ROTC was extremely unpopular during the Vietnam war as the training was conducted on college campuses and it seemed in contrast to a Liberal Arts education. Many ROTC bldgs on campus were the scenes of protests and in my case a bombing (Seattle University) My position has always been "what better way to produce balanced thinking officers reflective of the thinking of the nation and operating in combat theaters with an open mind then ROTC."
There's my commercial in favor of ROTC which for me was an awesome experience. Books and tuition was paid for and I received $100.00 a month back in the day which was actually quite good. I don't what the compensation is now. Seattle U was the most expensive school in the state at the time and it was all paid for by Uncle Sugar.

I served in the Army & Army Reserves (2 enlistments). I joined the Army at age 17 and it was a great move on my part. I needed the discipline back then. I came back home and my friends were doing the same crap, yet I had traveled, gone to several training schools, ran with Rangers, partied with the best, graduated high school (the Army paid for it) and made some good $$$ all thanks to the Army. These were the Reagan years and the Army was actually tough.

haha my only response to that is "wow....just....wow". btw it's corps, corpse is a cadaver or a dead person. You probably wouldnt want to be part of that group...
Remember, to be a pilot you have to be an officer which basically means you have to have a college degree. And then with the co-ed showers, there's a non-fraternization rule so basically all you'd do is look like a total creep and get sexual harassment charges filed against you for staring at everybody. and who can guarantee that anybody will look good?
Rangerboy, if you want to serve then don't tell anybody about the bad knee. They make you go through a short little physical for MEPS, and during that you have to squat down so your butt touches your heels, and then they make you walk around in heel-to-toe fashion. they also make you squat and stand up and do all that junk. if you can't do that, then don't bother trying. also, don't take painkillers beforehand so you can pass that part of the physical, because they do a blood test to see if drugs are in your system and you'll fail the blood test part of the physical.

And the percentage mix of male and female on the flat top? I think I'd pass. The military is a tough go right now. (It's never easy!) but folks who are willing to serve have nothing but my gratitude. If you've got a bum knee do everything you can to rehabilitate it. Whether you go in the service or not care now (or the lack of care) will come back on you throughout your life.
I have an artificial knee and it talks to me daily but it's far less painfull then the knee it replaced and I imagine my other kneee will come out in time as well. My real kneee gives me far more trouble then My "Bad" one.

2nd bats right, military service is pretty tough now (as usual) to those even with relatively light duty. My nextdoor neighbor flys refeuling jets for the national gaurd about 3 flights a week (usually 1 to greenland, 1 to germany, and one to iraq) and flies almost always at nights. flying like that never really is a picnic and is much harder than expected (her level of flight training hours even surpasses those of some of the fighter pilots) but she loves her job. She got do do a flyby at a nascar event in New Hampshire last year and loves the fact that she can go from iraq to the afternoon bus-stop in a days work. it can be pretty easy to undermind service with the military. ask any vet or service person, I'm pretty sure I've never ran into someone who regarded the military as an easy job, so thank you to those that do it every day.

I was rejected by the USN due to my knee. I played baseball (catcher) excesivly throughout grade school and just had to play football in highschool. My left knee took the toll and by the time I graduated highschool I could hardly walk.
So, I started a band and toured the midwest playing colleges and "2 bit sleazy dive" bars. The knee is good but now I'm too old to enlist...well not really. I'm 33, but my life goals lay in a different direction.
Hat's off to all that do serve. It's something I really wish I could have done.

Marines 1983-1997. I was an NBC specialist for that entire time. Loved it!! Spent all our time training to fight Russians up until the Gulf War. After that, it was training to fight folks that bought all the Russians nasty stuff.

a little off topic but does anybody know how bad your eyes need to be to be rejected by the service? I've always planned on not being able to serve due to my bad eyes but am wondering if a little laser surgery when I'm 18 would change that.

NBC is Nuclear - Biological - Chemical warfare...at least that's what I learned in the Navy and most branches either provide some training against these types of attacks in bootcamp or once you arrive at your assigned duty station. It's an on-going training that went hand in hand with any General Quarters/ Damage Control drills on board any USN ship. NBC training onboard ship is damn near worthless imo much in the same regards as the old school films when they told you to hide under your desk if an enemy drops a nuke on your town...lol. As far as guys with bad eyes, I'm one of them, joined the Navy, had to turn over my own glasses and contacts as soon as the pogues received my prescription, and was encumbered from that point on with bulky, ugly frames that your grandma might even dry-heave at. They're called your "BCs" = or Birth Control frames since any broad seeing you in them can almost guarantee you're not getting laid. Mike

While I love to reenact war I have no plan on ever serving our military, my parents were convinced I was military bound becuase of reenacting until I sat them down and told them that war is hell, horor, and never something that I ever want to experiance, and my interest only lies in it historically.
But I have the utmost respect for those of you that are going to be serving our country (or have served). For good or bad I support our soldiers not through politics but as people that may end up paying the ultimate cost.

Some fleeting thoughts.... but those pesky buggars known as your knees always seem to have a way of saying... "Go ahead and try bucko (Hyperextention)!" I think i am going the way of having thousands of people hate me in umpiring.... the youngest registered in my region of New York (not much but hey) and my knees will be dead by 25, and Advil will become my best friend and then the OD and..... whoa, OFF TOPIC sorry boys. All the respect to those in The National Guard, Reserve, Active Service, Cadets, and Veterans. May you enjoy your life.

I had my first National Guard drill this past weekend - something the active army and army reserve doesn't do for those before basic training. +1 for the National Guard.
I had a hell of a time. I never thought I'd like PT and Drill & Ceremony so much haha.

We're a free nation because of people who serve. I did a stint years ago in the Army. My brother did too but switched to the USAF for his reserve career and is now an E8 who is nearing his retirement. My daughter is currently at flight school in Pensacola and is an Officer in the Air Force.
