Alright there was a masked gunman that entered a lecture hall from an emergancy exit located at the front of the lecture hall. He walked in in a black trench coat with a black ski mask pulled out a shot gun and uloaded 5 buckshot shells into the class. He then proceeded to reload his weapon. It is unlcear if he continued to fire after he reloaded. From accounts from my friends who were there he was very calm.
This sick Bastered RELOADED HIS GUN!!!! God
I was about to leave fo my class and I would have walked right by that building on my way to a Geology lab. If I hjad not been responding to a Pm from 2ndBat I would have been over there.
This happened about 200yrds from my dorm room.

According to the NIU 6 people are dead and 14 injured.
A friend of mine was very good friends with someone who was killed apparently. Its wierd I saw this kid not too long ago too.
Theres a very surreal feelign right nwo about all this. I have been watching it on the news and TV and it feels liek it was far away from me that thsi all happened. But in reality I was no more than 200 yards from it.

As a parent my usual response would be what were you doing finalizing a PM with abuddy when you should have been off to class. As a parent with two kids currently in college (my oldest graduated four years ago) I'm reallly glad I kept you on line with our ongoing dialogue via PM!!!!!
Life is full of serendipity and pure luck of the draw. We are sure happy such worked out in a positive way for you. It could just as easily been the other way around. What is with these dickless pathetic whimps who see a gunfree zone as an exploitably opportunity for brief omnipotence and power at the expense of others in hopes of imortality through infamy. I say don't release his name don't give him ANY recognition describe him only as a pathetic and weak minded waif of life and don't encourage others to copy these kinds of creeps. I'll bet the probably, liberal minded, gun hating professor wishes someone (or he) had a gun in that auditorium or that the mere possibilty would have encouraged the creep to pick some other gun free availably, vulnerable target.
I'm typically not the pro gun advocate I appear to be in this rant but for Chrimony sake, enough is enough! These things have to stop and making a campus or high school a gun free zone seems to be the invitation to violence. The inevitable plastering of his picture, background and life story will only encourage the next nut job that an act such as this is the quickest way to get your face on CNN! The public learns nothing and benefits little from such exposure other then to watch your crazy neighbor or relative closely when he goes off his meds.

I just got back from a candle light vigial. It was sad. I also found out a person that I personally knew was there.........and killed.
I met her at a bible study group I attended with a friend who asked me too (Im agnostic by the way) but I thought it would be fun. She is such a nice person, very very quiet and shy though and a sincerity you could see in her eyes. Im glad that I was able to meet her and at least have one conversation with her, Im not too sure I fathom the fact that I was goign to go to a bible study again this week and wotn see thsi person who I barely knew but am so greatfull I spoke too. The kind of person you cry for becuase its so unfair.

I'm typically not the pro gun advocate I appear to be in this rant but for Chrimony sake, enough is enough! These things have to stop and making a campus or high school a gun free zone seems to be the invitation to violence. O... what states allow it, i believe its Iowa and i cant remember the other, where they allow the concealed carry license on campus. At first i though its was just generally Insane, as that gives any whack job the right to bring a gun to campus and shoot it up. Though, it seems a lot of the the professors actually feel very safe by it knowing that if one of his students goes out of line with a gun, then there is a possibility that 10 others there could take him down. This was on the news not to long aver Virginia Tech. It does make some sense, although i think i would still feel a little uneasy about the though of my fellow class mates walking around with 45's and 44 magnums on their belts. I can also remember after Virgina Tech, the talk about training teachers with firearms, and letting them carry at high schools and middle schools. Already this morning O'Bama was talking about cracking down on Gun laws, though he supports the 2nd Amendment. Yet, you have to remember that half of weapons used in crimes are obtained illegal, or in the case of children, from a parent or guardian. At this point, it does seem though like the Conceal carry license is a good idea, as in states that allow it crime rates are dramatically less. It seems there will never come an easy solution to the question of firearms, even banning firearms all together isnt a viable solution, look at the prohibition, now add millions of angry civilians with weapons collections that cost them a house payment, and having the government telling them to turn them in.... not going to end pretty, the though revolution comes to mind in that sense. Tis a troubled world we live in. Now as for the victims, i cannot explain how utterly sorry i am for them and their families, it pains me in so many ways to see this happen to so many innocent people, and it just pisses me off. There was my little rant...

This is so terrible! One should feel safe and secure at school! This is not combat! or a battlefield! but now it seems to relate to one. These are not memories one should have of school, at all. Is the only answer armed security guards, like secret service guys. Security at airports, malls and public buildings is becoming the norm. How much longer before we all start reverting back to the old west and carrying sidearms. Now one has to look over their shoulders for someone in black and be worried if that's a killer. Hang in there TG

glad that your alright but just go's to show how gun laws only help criminals how's that? Not sure if this is what he ment, but turns out the guy bought his weapons LEGALLY! they were talking about it on the news, he got them about a weeks ago at a gun shop in Champaign when he was enrolled at U of I. He also suffered from Severe depression, and was off his medication when he went on the rampage. Here is the newest article on it. Just goes to support the idea of Background checks. news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080215/ap_on_re_us/niu_shooting-Cary

Glad to hear you're ok Jer. I have a couple of friends who go to NIU. My dad rememebrs the lecture hall and how a situation like this would be so destructive in there. The rows go up, and the aisles are so close to the wall, that the 300 some kids in the middle would have no way of escaping.
Its terrible when these things happen.

Jeremiah, I'm sure you've called your parents but call them again to assure them that you're dealing with it okay and give them the latest updates about the goings on at NIU. I can assure you that with you off at college they think about you constantly and with this incident their brains are working overtime. They need to hear your voice and reassurances.

Dont worry. Before the lines jammed up here yesterday I was able to get three calls off. I first called my mom, then my dad, and then my Girlfriend. After that I had a hard time getting throuhg to people but I got through to everyone and made sure they were all ok.
Since then I have had correspondence with my parents at least once every hour and 1/2 so communication is deffinatly there. Also they are dragging me hoem tomarrow dispite my wishes to stay here. For some reason I feel its disrespectfull to leave because it feels like I would be running away form the problem.
I had a friend pull me aside today and thanked me for being the rock for our group ( abotu 10 of us). I was surprised by that becuase I simply didnt see myself as that but he said that I took charge of everyone and keept people calm all day yesterday and today.............I didint even realize I did any of that.

Guys, let's keep this post focused on the students who lost their lives. Not the piece-of-applesauce who killed them or gun laws. Start another thread for that. At least give those that died at the hands of a coward that much respect.

So I have come home today becuase my parents came and dragged me out. I feel disrespectfull for leaving but its probably a good thing Im not in the dorms anymore.
So somethign interesting happened after I got home. I went upstairs and sat on the couch for awhile and then decied that I wanted to go to my workshop and simply work on some things to keep my mind off of NIU if nto for the night.
So I go downstairs to my workshop and I dotn really knwo how to descirbe it but I cant pick up my airsoft guns. I just cant do it, infact I really really dont want too at all and thats soemthing I was not expecting. I saw them and my chest tightened up and I had to leave my own workshop. Guns do kill people

People kill people, not guns. A gun cannot shoot itself.
I'm sorry that this event happend at our school. But instead of beating yourself up, help out the people in need. Go and be that "rock" even if its over the phone.

Staying away from your guns for a time is probably a good thing. Certainly it will be a comfort to your parents during this time of imbalance. Time will settle your feelings and being sensitive to your own reluctance and the uneasy sense of those close to you is smart. When I came home from overseas I wanted nothing to do with uniforms or guns for many years. I think your reaction is quite normal. Most likely it will pass with time and probably realtively soon. It's not a rational response as Drew points out but we are emotional creatures and that fact has to be respected.

John, I agree that we are emotional creatures. I know how that goes... TG. I'd suggest just sitting down and thinking about it. Only because it just happend. Get some friends together and just talk. It hurts worse not to, keeping it all to yourself just kills you on the inside. I've been there and done that. I've been through some stuff that made me do some dumb stuff. If I would have had someone to talk to. It would have been quite different.
I can't say that I've been through a shooting, but I have watched people die ie My Grandpas. Stuff over the internet isn't worth a grain of salt, but I hope you take my grain.
