one of my other passions is playing biliards with my grandfather and his brother bernard huntley. so obviously over a 3 hour peroid of playing 9 ball and talking about his experiences in the battle of the bulge he told virtually his entire experience throught the battle of the bulge. he also wrote a 30 er so page memior of his experience, his regiment, and an overview of the battle complete with maps stories ext. so i figured i can condense some if these stories into a very long message post.
i figured i'll start with a somewhat light and comical story in some twisted way. he told me how after being dug in for about a week or so he made a bet with his holemate. the stakes were the first hot meal theyd get when they got off the line. the bet. well i dont know how to describe it but the little ditty that goes ba ba ba ba ba........ba ba. if you could understand that then ill try to tell you that he could fire the first 5 shots of his m1 and then the germans would respond by firing the last 2. shure enough the germans did so and he got 2 servings of grub once they were pulled off.
the next story is about the struggle he had to go through just to get "the best christmas dinner he ever had" which he also refers to as 'the zippo chicken" on christmas eve him and a friend spotted a chickens coop near a house that had been shelled out and abandoned. they nearly cried tears of joy when they saw that one chicked was still left in the coop. they killed it with thier knife, brought it back to the line "which was only about a hundred yards away" and tried to think of ways of which to cook it. he told me that any smoke would be spotted by the germans and endanger their unit. whats the only flame small enough not to cause a visible trail of smoke. their and about 3 other mens zippo lighters. they made a little rotisary and lit all 5 zippos to cook it. obviously a chicken cooked over 5 zippos will taste as good as licking the inside of a trash barrel but these were tired, cold, and most importantly hungry men. he told me how each man had a small part of virtually raw chicken and each said it was the best damn meal they had their whole life.
ok ive noticed how insanely long this post has been so im gonna have to stop now but there are literally a dozen more stories like this which your shurely enjoy. ill post more in the future or mabye even copy sections of the memiors themselves.
