I picked these two guns up from Kapowee.com. They are both Cybergun refurbs. Thompson -- On the metal parts I did some wearing away of the paint on edges and various other spots using a fine sanding pad. I actually prefer this to steel wool. Then I polished it with a cloth wheel mounted in a drill. This brings up a lustre similar to a blued finish. Since the lower half of the gun is plastic I applied silver paint to simulate wear. My technique still needs perfecting. I also rubbed silver paint into the plastic surfaces to give it a grey tone more closely matching the painted metal surfaces. I added gouges and scrapes to the plastic furniture with a file. I also did some sanding a filling with epoxy along the seam lines. I then applied a Minwax gel stain. This stain is great for fiberglass and plastic surfaces. It goes on thick so it doesn't run. Most importantly, it will actually dry, unlike other traditional stains that stay tacky on plastic. I also added a repro kerr sling. MP-40 -- Again, I sanded and polished the metal surfaces to simulate wear and to bring up a lustre. I put black grips on because I've seen some stock photos of real MP-40s outfitted this way. I think it adds a unique touch. I did some distressing on the grips using a screwdriver. I applied amber shellac to the side panels and grips to age it a bit and add some texture to the surface. I added a repro sling. Your comments are welcomed......

As with most things, practice makes perfect. These are the fourth and fifth guns I've worked on. I seem to get a little better each time. I also learn things I wish I'd known from the beginning. The most important lesson I learned on these guns is the use of gel stain. This stuff is GREAT! Here's a couple of detail shots to show how that stian looks.

Nice work! You seem conflicted though? Can't decide to do American or German?

I love to collect any guns which I consider "iconic," regardless of time period or country of origin. I've also got an AKM, P-08 Luger, P-96 Mauser (box cannon), and a Colt M1911A1.
