I have black para boots from the 60's and they are the same design as ww2 boots except they are black. I fit leggings over them but I need to know if they are fine because they are black.

They are ok if you put leggings over them, but there is a really cool way to make them 100% accurate ww2 paratrooper boots.
wash the boots, take some fine sand paper and sand them moderatly all over.
then spray dark brown vynle shoe paint and WALAH!! its ammazing, you could sell them as original WW2.
the paint costs like 8 bux!
these are the boots im wearing in all my paratrooper pictures in the gallery. -Gordak

the sand paper works better and doesen't make you smell like a nail salon..the nail polish remover will also dry the hell out of the leather....from my own experience,i wouldn't do it.

Ok tandypaint.com DONT SAND, use their deglazer to take off the old finish. I sanded mine and dyed them directly, bad idea. Easily fixed with this deglazer though so no problem. They also have the direct, straightforward color. Russet. Get the russet color dye, the deglazer, and a nice waterproof vinyl coat for it and there you go. Nice old boots transformed for 15 bucks! I sanded the toes and heels down before i figured out i could have bought deglazer. Coming in the mail. Dont get the deglazer though till i have tested it cause I dont want you guys to mess up your boots.

You really do want to try to get the finish off first (if you can) prior to using the paint. Otherwise it'll chip and look (well like leather that was painted!) Do it in a room temperature room. Not out in the garage in the winter and be sure your room is well ventilated while still kept warm. The smell is quite pronounced. I used the nu life color spray shown above. I bought two cans and had enough left over to do a couple holsters that were black.
The end result is quite good. I found a pair of WW2 double buckle boots at a Thrift store that someone had dyed purple!!!! they were hideous as you might imagine but the boots underneath were very nice and in my mind worth salvaging. I "refinished" them in a suede brownish tan and then scuffed them up somewhat after I was finished. I sold them on Ebay for $100.00 or so to a guy that was delighted with them. (size 10 so they were too big for me anyway)
It was a lot of work and I re did them once in the trial and error effort but I feel like I rescued a piece of history and got them to a decent home. The soles were virtually pristine. Like any paint don't over do it and plan on two "light coats" rather then one heavy one. If I can hide purple you can surely cover black!

Should I take these to the shoe store to get them recolored or go with the nu-life stuff, because this isnt really working.

Clean your boots and do what you can to remove any polish. (de glazer) Buy the Nu life and paint the color onto your boots (tape off your soles of course) pretty straight foward and pretty hard to bugger up.
