It is not possible to my knowledge to dye a garment a lighter color then it initially was. I've certainly not had luck trying it. You can fade garments somewhat with lemon or dye remover and with great care dilluted bleach. Perhaps that would create the look you seek. For normal garments this would NOT be recommended as the amount of fading is seldom even. In the case of a combat garment (especially a pathfinder jump suit) this is actually somewhat desireable. Once you've managed to lighten it you can either splotch OD paint directly on the fabric or spray paint OD paint in appropriate patterns.
This will look authentic in that this is exactly what was done, not only to pathfinder uniforms but other airborne elements as well. In addition Infantry units occassionally spray or splothg painted their M41s to darken them. Especially common with elements attached to the second armored division and Ranger units.
Prior to the Rhine jump the 18th airborne troopers were lined up and a party with a spray paint unit walked down the line and camo'd their uniforms while the troops were wearing them (both front and rear) The result was the pants were only painted up to the level the jackets covered! There are examples of these partially painted airborne jump pants at both the benning Museum and the Ft Bragg museum.
Good luck with your efforts. Paint on fabric is a weird deal but eventually drys and works fine. (I hate the smell and it does take a while to go away as does the stickiness) I painted a couple of my M42 jump suits and one of my M-41 (replica) jackets. They came out quite nice.
In Saving Private Ryan the character played by "sam malone" from cheers potrays a pathfinder CO and he wears heavily paint splotched M-42s.
