Here is a picture of my real MP-40. there are two ways soldiers mounted the sling, and this is most popular way. The other way is with the sling reversed end to end. It is possible to place the forward sling ring on the left side of the gun when attaching the barrel such that the sling lays on the left side of the receiver, but this is very rarely done. When looking at the hundreds of WWII photos of soldiers carrying the MP-40, THIS is the way it's usually slung. Often the gun was just hung across the chest with the sling around the neck, and the barrel pointed to the soldier's right side and the stock folded. Here is a YouTube vid of my brother and I with the MP-40.
