As Patton once said. "I'd rather have a crack German Division in front of me then an average French Division beside me." Schwartzkopf once said "Going to war without the French as an ally is like going deer hunting and forgetting your accordian. Odds are you arn't going to miss either." or the add in the sporting goods section. French Army rifle, excellent shape, never fired and only dropped once." With the exception of Napolean the French have a long and consistent recod of poor marshall skills.

well the maginot line was effective at keeping the germans at bay at alsace... temproarily
although the germans didnt go right through belgium at first. if the germans had simply repeated the schlieffen plan, they would have been annihilated, due to the massive concentration ofFrench and British forces in belgium at the time. However, Manstien suggested directly to hitler that a more southern thrust across the lower somme would cut off the massive force from paris and reinforcements. Hitler agreed and allowed him to proceed with this new plan. with this and the German force coming through belgium, the allies were trapped. this led to the massive allied evacuation/disaster at dunkirk. after that, the germans were able to easily plow through the remainder of France and Belgium, and able to come around the back of the maginot line, which therefore negated its usefulness in keeping the germans form crossing at Alsace.
