Engingeers, I believe were classified under Technician Classes 1 through 5. 5 being the lowest rank, and 1 being the highest. At The Front sells them and has more information on them under their rank insignia page.
EDIT: Do the grades go to 3rd grade, or all the way down to 1st grade?

In certain campaigns or missions engineers helmets would occassionally be marked. At D-Day in N Africa and the Italian Campaign as well as at Normandy some 1st ID engineers tasked with obstacle clearance had helmet markings so folks could readily see what they were tasked to do or summon them if needed. Often these were marked in chock however so wouldn't have been permanent or noticeable within a week or so. The 101st Engineer units had a "E" where most had the diamond, spade, heart and club and the Recon element had a "R" These were painted on. Unless you're depicting a specific role at a specific event I'd just go with the 1st ID patch on the front of the helmet and have specialist rank or if depicting an officer, the enginneer collar insignia.
