im planning on starting a 101st airborne kit. now i was going to order a m42 jump/combat suit. I saw that they came in kahki and found out the m43's are like m42, but for the cold and were OD, i wanna find out if i can like get a m42 OD trouser and a normal m42 jacket, and a m43 jacket, is that possible??? if not does Zak have m43's? i saw m42's on his site and they were 164 for a set, but it is 230 on ATF for a m43! haha please help me understand the difference between m42's and m43's and were i could get a cheap pair of m43's. thanks

42's were for airborne, 43's were for everyone including infantry.

you would have either one or the other 2ndBatt or someone may correct me if i'm wrong but from what i understand ,when you were rotated out of the line, you were given new outfits and had to turn your old stuff in to the QM's.that and the fact that your pants will wear out quicker than your top would.

not every time you were off the line, but that was the general idea. alot of times when you were able to get a shower, they would give you a new set of clothes regardless of wear and tear. I know the 5th rangers got a shower after about 6 months or so. The 18th RCT of the 1st ID got pulled from the line after the tunisian campaign and spent a while training for the invasion of Sicily but did not get any new uniforms. apparently, patton refused to give them new uniforms unless they invaded sicily, held their ground and had at least 1/3 of the regiment left, then he said he would give them the khaki warm weather uniforms. up until that point, they were in N africa with the woolen OD's.

All units after September 44 used them, that's very basic knowledge. Although some members of the 504th PIR used M42's into Market Garden and even during the bulge due to supply problems and personal prefrance.

While the M-43 OD heavier weight uniform became current issue many troopers had several pair of the old style uniforms some got tuned in and some didn't. Guys wore the old style right up to the end of the war in ever reduced numbers. You didn't always have to turn in old gear on a one on one basis to draw new. Often times airborne troopers had a field set of M-42s and a garrison set for stepping out. The OD color of the M-43s was very well receieved by the combat soldier as it was clearly superior camouflage for Northern Europe and the M-43 jacket and M-43 jump pants were very comfortable.
