That is a 4th type dog tag , the 4th type where used from March1944 to April 1946.
So your tags info goes like this Cook, Virgil G. 34926192 T44-44 O
P
first line = surname, first name, second initial
second line = army serial number, tetanus immunization, tetanus toxoid , blood type.
third line = empty
fourth line = empty
fifth line = religion
And the dog tag serial number means that he was from the Third Army Area , Fourth Corps Area (North Carolina-South Carolina-Georgia-Florida-Alabama-Tennessee-Mississippi-Louisiana) HQ=Atlanta, Ga. Eighth Corps Area (Texas-Oklahoma-Colorado-New Mexico-Arizona (partly) HQ= Ft. Sam Houston, Tex. So he came from one of those States.

Old Virgil is dead but he lived in MS all of his life. The same house . The house is less than a mile from the john hurt museum. But proof to me that he fought in WWII or that era is that I found M1carbine bullets, clips, and A bandoleer in there. And yes that is all that is on the dog tags

Thank you, I know a few people who knew him as a friend , really nice calm man, who always went duck hunting with his best friend elliston. In fact I found an old mallard decoy that said elliston at the bottom. But nobody knew anything about his military career. He would never talk about it.
