"is U S N MK "
Judging by that, I'm going to say the US Navy.

my late grandpa was in the navy in ww2 he never said anything about knifes. In the matter of small arms he metioned something about carrying a .45 while guard duty on the ship. He was a seamen first class and maned a .50cal anti aircraft gun on one of the upper decks he served on the U.S.S Pennslyvania.

i just took another look at the picture and im pretty shure the knife itself is the m3 but i closely examined the sheath and it is the same one thats in the picture. i dont know if you know what model the sheath is but its displayed with airborne equiptment. although i doubt its an airborne only item. i wish i could show you the pictures but its too hard to capture and the page is too glossy.

You have a Mk2 USN knife. Common to the Marine Corp which was and still is a part of the US Navy.

Its a navy issue knife its also a navy issue m8 style scabbard not quite a m8 on the metal part around the opening it should be marked USN mk. II on the M8 they are marked M8 also the color is blue. the knife is not an m3 trench knife the m3 is more narrow. and its knife guard has a little bent in it. This was more of a utility knife then anything. Im sure marines used them but i cant imagine a marine seeking a navy knife when they love their Kabars. corpsman would have used these on account of them being navy personel. Hope that helps
