Hey, just a quick question.
Was it normal to sew division patches and rank chevrons on the M-1943 field jacket? I bought an authentic M1943 and am wondering whether or not to attach my 3rd Infantry Division patch and Sgt. Chevrons. Any standard operating procedure in this situation?

SOP for EVERYTHING we do is research . Depending on what period of the war, and what unit you're doing, find photos of what they actually did. This should get you started: www.dogfacesoldiers.org/ And remember, even though the 3rd ID supposedly tested m43 uniforms at Anzio, you really don't see widespread use of them, at all, until late October - early November when they're in the Vosges in France. Good luck!

In garrisson rank was sewn onto everything as was the division patch in most cases. However once in the field Division insignia and especially rank insignia was generally removed with front line soldiers primarily for sniper protection and to counter enemy intel efforts. There was absolutely no theater wide SOPs on this so just about anything would work and there are photos to support it.
