I have been wondering if the Infantry used haversacks after they were issued m43's and od gear. I always thought they did but all the late war photos I have seen show them with suspenders and mussete bags. Could someone please tell me if they used them or not?

Yes, As mentioned several times they were an extremely unpopular item of kit and the Mussette bag and M-43 bag were much preferred but not widely available. The Haversack soldiered on till the end of the war in diminishing numbers. The design was poor especially when used as designed to carry a long verticle bed role. Even with the additional "BiB" they couldn't hold much and were awkward to get into and out of. Some soldiers sewed them into more of a conventional day pack and eliminated many of the then redundant straps.
They absolutely were a goofy design left over from an earlier time. I think they're cool since they are so evocative of that period of time.

speaking of altering the haversack, I saw a pic in one of the books I'm reading of a guy who had cut all the flaps off of the straps and turned it into a pair of suspenders......
