I recently purchased a US ww2 style helmet and liner (perhaps Vietnam era?) and it is a wonderful helmet. The liner is complete and has all straps included. The only problem is that there is an ungodly stench that makes me afraid to put it on my head. I can't describe the smell, but there is leather components inside the liner, and I thought maybe it was a 40+ year old leather stench. Right now my helmet is sitting in my garage, and the garage stinks! Does anybody know how to get rid of this smell? I was going to buy leather cleaner or somthing, but I'm not sure if it will help. Please help me!

Keep it and buy a replacement at a surplus store. Trying to get the"funk" out will leave your head inchy and possibly give you a rash. Really its the outside that counts....right?

Fabreeze FTW!
I use it all the time, I stockpile the stuff. Spray it in hats, helmets, on wool stuff that I'm to cheap to dry clean. I've never had problems with it giving me a rash, or making me itchy.

It didn't work, I soaked the thing in Fabreeze and let it air out in the garage, there is no difference. The problem with tossing the liner, is that I need the liner more than the helmet lol!

Is there any way to replace the leather, or could a place like toppots or lawdog do anything about it?
