How does one go about sizing leggings? I see various sizes available and I wasn't sure if you measure around your calf at the thickest part or if you measure the length of your calf (from heel to knee perhaps?). Anybody know where to find a size chart and how/what to measure? Thanks in advance.

I am pretty sure they're sized by the diameter of your calf...not certain though. You can never go wrong with a 3R though. If you have very small tiny legs get a 1R otherwise I would just stick with a 3R.

My only concern is that I'm 6'4" and slender. Normally if its long enough its too big and if it fits its generally too short. I was just wanting to make sure before I ordered something that didn't fit well. I've seen pics of guys wearing them where they were obviously to big ie: too much room around the calf. This looks sloppy and they won't wear well when trudging/running through the woods during a game. Any ideas on size for a tall slender size?

It is a calf measurement. Once again GIs of the time were quite young and quite fit alsio quite skinny having survived the depression. You see alot of size 1 and 2 leggings and occassional 3,s It;s rare to see size 4 and 5s but they made them. 3s fit most modern reenactors if worn over low quarters or 3/4 height boots. With so many Herfys hefords getting into reenacting. (honestly what are they feeding these kids?) It's hard to find large enough sizes in the original stuff.

Ok, so a size 1 through 3 ought to fit. I was planning on getting some jump boots so I guess these will work with them right? Also, I have seen sizing charts while hunting around but now I can't seem to find one. Anybody have a link to one so I can measure?

Leggings arent needed for jump boots. Just low quarter boots, like service shoes or roughouts.

Ok, then I'll do service boots. I like the look of the leggings. I've just read that there are long sizes as well like 2L, 3L etc. Are the hard to come by and how much longer than regulars are they? Thanks.

The service shoes are best for use under leggings although they will fit over jump boots which would make your boots appear to be the cap toed service shoe which was worn with leggings. If you put them over jump boots you'll probably need 3Rs. I have perhaps a dozen sets of leggings and there really is a wide variety of designs. Some have seven hooks, most have eight and one set has nine! One even has a very obscure zipper up the back which frankly is awesome. I've often thought velcro or a zipper would be a great idea since they are such a pain to put on. Remember hooks on the outside with the hooks facing backwards.

I have a 19'' calf at the thickest part and I can put on 3R's pretty comfortably, Sometimes I leave them open a hair toward the bottom but, otherwise, they work. I hope that gives you a reference.
BTW, you don't wear Jump boots and leggings. The whole reason the jump boots were taller were to make up for not wearing leggings and give more support for the impact of landing from a parachute. Later the military realized how useful they were and the vietnam-modernday combat boot showed up in a very similar style to the jump boot.

Thanks for all the replies and the help. I've settled on a 2R size based on my skinny legs . I think those will fit the best overall. I'm going to go with standard type boots instead of the jump boots as several of you have mentioned this is the correct way to wear leggings. Are the lengths from top to bottom the same and just the diameters different or were they different lengths say smaller diameter the smaller the size? Thanks again. Stretch

I really beleieve the size was based on calf size not height. All of my legging are pretty much the same length. USMC leggings were shorter with less hooks and someone suhhested the RANGERs cut down their leggings to a shorter height. Probably as result of the exposure to the British leggings during their course wiork with the British commandos . I haven't seen photographic evidence to suggest this was widespread but several people seem to insist on it. I don't know one way or the other.

I've seen Pictures with rangers with shorter leggings, they are the same leggings that regular infantry had, its just some guys just cut them so they were shorter.
