Stopped by a surplus store in my neck of the woods. Looked through 20 helmet shells - the last one I looked at, I bought for $15. From I could see it's a Front Seam, Swivel Bale, McCord. Has only the 557C marking on the inside. No cracks. It APPEARS (unsure) to have another coat of paint over the original corked paintjob but I cannot tell. Front Inside Rear Side Since I have to order chinstraps I'm unsure whether or not to re-paint & cork it. I'm leaning towards just leaving it alone. ///ed///

I would leave it alone. Put some chinstraps on it and age them and turn it into a helmet like Easygreen sells on ebay. Makes it look original and makes for a cool show piece.

Depends on what you want to use it for.
If you just want to use it as a cool display piece, put some chinstraps on it and leave it. If you want it for reenacting, I'd repaint and cork it.
That's an awesome deal for 15$ tho. Have you got a liner for it?

Not a bad find for $15, If I were you, I'd chip the paint off, remove the rust, re-paint/cork it, get the chin straps, and then, it's a field grade steel pot, or a nifty wall hanger.

I think I'm going to leave it alone for now. A net would cover up the scuffed-up areas. The photos don't really do it justice.
Not being anything close to a WW2 helmet era guru I remember seeing a paratrooper liner at another store some weeks back. Had original A-yokes, suspension, nape, no chin strap. I dismissed it as a vietnam era (had a vietnam pot on it) but after I read more and more liners. I'm going back to have another look. Hell it was only $14.

Massachusettes, Taxachusettes, Democratic republic thereof... The para liner in question was a vietnam liner. Suspesion dated 1968. But the liner was ALL green and did not really resemble a liner from 68. The surplus stores in the western half of the state have a MIX of original surplus and just about everything from Cheaperthandirt and Sportsmansguide. They don't know what they have 99% of the time. The paraliner was on a 80's helmet shell with a british camo cover on it. Sometimes you just get lucky. ///ed///
