From my understanding, you wore what you had. Considering you didn't always get A) what you needed and B) what you had it is conceavable that a GI would have worn an HBT shirt he was issued in the past when his Wool shirt was worn beyond feild repair.
As for the khaki. Are you taking the garrison shirts? That one I'd have to look into.
In the European Theater, HBT was common. I wouldn't go so far as to say a full HBT uniform is appropriate at all times, that would depend on the campagin, time of year, and loaction, but a peice here and a peice there looks good and gives the rag tag impression of a hardened fighter relatively well.
I use to sport an HBT cap with all wool uniform. It was comfortable and held my helmet on better than my Jeep Cap.

Khaki shirts were not worn. HBT's were usually worn with wools with the exception of non combat troops who often wore the HBT's as a work outfit.

Yeah, the khakis were a dress uniform, not a combat one, and only a few units wore HBT's into combat.

The best thing to do is to research your specific unit. Some units had HBTs at a certain time, for a certain campaign, others had them nearly all the time, and some units never had them. There really isn't a one-size-fits-all answer for this question. You just have to research the specific unit being portrayed to see what they had. So, that being said, what unit are you looking to portray?
As for the khaki shirt. I haven't seen much to suggest they would be correct for a combat impression in the ETO or the MTO. There are a few accounts of guys wearing them, but it is definatey the exception and not the norm. However, they would be correct (unit and time frame depending) for the PTO. On Guadalcanal, the 25th ID was wearing primarily 1st pattern HBTs and coveralls, but other divisions were wearing a mix of the denim fatigues and khakis. It is all unit and time frame depending, so as stated above, research the specific unit and time frame you are looking to portray.
Hope this helps, Shawn
