The oldest member of the Band of Brothers Ed Mauser passed away last week. Ed was not depicted in the mini series although he was an original Toccoa member of Easy Company 506 and two years older than Major Winters at 94 years old when he passed of pancreatic cancer. He kept his service during the war a secret from community members and even family members were surprised to learn he was one of the so called band of brothers learning of it only at his funeral.
Only upon recieving a copy of the mini series did he share some of his experiences with close family members confirming much about the series as quite accurate.
Upon being called a hero, like so many other soldiers, he modestly denied it and said simply that he was like a lot of other guys who simply did what he was told. No more, no less. That he was asked to do so much didn't strike him as heroism.

It's sad that he didn't share his experiences with anyone outside his family. But thats his right. I wish I talked to my Dad and Uncles more about their Wartime experiences.

I only had 1 relative that served at the frontlines. My uncle Jim Gardener 1st Marine Division served on Guadlcanal. He was shot in the leg and left home early where he could never walk again. But that shows how lucky most of our soldiers dont die overseas. Patton once said "a soldier should be buried where he dies." I dont believe that becaues they should be buried in their own land. So Rest in Peace Ed Mauser stay in peace with God in Heaven.
