I was wondering what unit the filthy 13 was. Cuz i know Jake Mcneice, the squad leader, was from the 506th HQ. I read they blew up a bridge on D-day. My concern is what helmet marking did they wear? Just a plane spade? or a spade with a tick mark pointing to the right or up top idk. Ive also seen footage of guys with a giant "E" on the side of their helmet. I believe they are a 506th demolition team, but i may be wrong. Were they also apart of the Filthy 13? Here are some photos. Jake Mcneice is on the right. The guy on the left has an E on his helmet so im asuming he would have an E painted on his helmet also. The paratrooper entering the c47 has an E on his helmet, but the paratrooper behind him has the 506th 1st bat marking on his helmet. just looks cool looking probably the most famous pic of the Filthy 13

Ok this is an old thread but just for information the E stencil on the side of his helmet indicates he is a member of the 326th Airborne Engineer Battalion who trained and fought alongside the HQ section 3rd Battalion 506th Demolition team Demo/sabo. The filthy 13.

As for the mark on the spade decal I'm not 100% but it would either be at the 9 'o'clock position indicating 3rd Bat.or at 12'o'clock indicating HQ section

The "filthy 13" were engineers. Because their indian war paint caught the eye and lense of coorespondents and military media it was widely reported that many of the 1 01st paratroopers wore mohigan haircuts and war paint when in fact few did.
Throughout the war this unit distinguished themselves. Engineers frequently bounced around supporting various frontline units hence saw way more action than a normal unit typically would. Among other things they were instrumental in guiding the resupply aircraft at Bastogne.
Along with the Pathfinders they were the elite of the elite.
