A lot of London is up in arms, now big other cities like Birmingham are seeing unrest.
Interesting times over our side of the pond guys.. interesting time.

I saw those headlines yesterday and thought of you mate. I wouldn't be surprised if that sort of activity jumped the pond. Some of us tire of our corporate masters.

What sparked this fire?(no pun intended) This is the first I am hearing about this. I know there were riots when I was there, a couple weeks before the royal wedding.

Its a complicated cause but basically the 'excuse' is that the police shot dead an armed suspect and there was a protest for 'answers'.
The reality is 30 years of declining standards, kids all wanting to be gangsters, a castrate legal system that means no one fears the law as its often easier in prison than the home they grew up in , teachers who are not allowed to disciplne children... basically it's been brewing for about decade

Summarised by a friend:
"Create a society that values material things above all else. Strip it of industry. Raise taxes for the poor and reduce them for the rich and for corporations. Prop up failed financial institutions with public money. Ask for more tax, while vastly reducing public services. Put adverts everywhere, regardless of people's ability to afford the things they advertise. Allow the cost of food and housing to eclipse people's ability to pay for them. Light blue touch paper."

And a legal system that's tilted in favor of big money.

I thought this was in the UK? Sounds like you are talking about the US That equally applies to the US. I would add to the comment about teachers, parents who don't discipline their kids. And a legal system that's tilted in favor of big money. If i'm brutally honest... and i'm sorry if i offend here. Most of what is wong with the UK has been culturally imported from the USA... urban youth gangsta rap culture on one side, rampant capitalism/corruption and a 'you are what you own' culture on the other. Mindless hollywood films dumbing down books and jerry springer style talk shows celebrating being a tool.... We have childre in the UK who refer to the police as 'the feds' because they see it on TV and dont understand we dont have a federated system. We've also adopted the US litigation 'sue happy' culture to the point where we are tied down in political correctness and health and safey laws in case anyone is ever hurt or offended and might sue you... Britain is slowly sinking down the pan tbh and we are not even in the position to have any industry or resources left either. Oh and the violence s spreading slightly.. Birmingham and Liverpool have had rioting and in my city there was an abortive attempt last night but nothign mre than a police station petrol bombed and a shopping centre vandalised. Honestly I've taught in UK 'sink estate' inner city schools since about 2006 and the kids all want to be dealers, gangsters or rappers... the dont think they can have (or want reall) real jobs as that might require working hard at school... I seem to recall every lad in one school (white and black) thinking 50 cent was the most amazing guy in the world...

I'm not gonna lie British people are very good at getting pissed off! I'm not saying that as a bad thing either, it seems that there is no nonviolent way to deal with corporate takeover and a horrible culture ( Gangsta rap) as you said before. Its unfortunate that it works the way it does but I don't see it changing any time soon. Good luck over there.

No you're all right (and I know its a Penile cranium minority over your way who iddolise 'gangsters') but society is a ratchet... you can slacken standards off but you can never tighten it back up again.

society is a ratchet... you can slacken standards off but you can never tighten it back up again. Might be the most true statement I've heard in a long time. Sadly, I think the western culture has been in a pretty slippery decline for a LONG time and it's just slow and steady. A little here and there and no one really notices until we all look around and say "what the hell happened to people? When did we all start acting like this".

Instead of banning firearms they should be banning TV. Get these kids away for the corrupted garbage in the media.

I think banning things is the wrong approach. Television and music shouldn't be blamed. Neither should firearms for that matter. People should be blamed. I can play a violent video game and not go out and shoot people for drugs.
Standards have just fallen so much that it's disgusting. I live in hick ville and everyone's solution to fixing the world's problems is bombing Iraq, Iran, China, Russia, insert other country that they know nothing about here. It sickens me when I realize that the idiots sitting around me in school will be the successors of our country.

Maybe its time for us to start our own party, name a Leader over it, and overthrow Obama! From there we can make it a one party nation an annex a few nations here and there........This all reminds me of something, I just can't remember what....

Yeah, that sounds like a good idea. There are enough English speakers in Canada to justify annexation. Some guy did stuff like this with good success during the 30s but I think it lost popularity in the 40s for whatever reason
