This poll will help me decide which tunic I should purchase.

Why do you care what other peoples favorite tunic is? What is yours that should be your question when purchasing. I voted M36 but I bought an M43 as I am doing Late-war.

Because i am the most indecisive person in the world. Just today I changed my mind from doing a Heer impression, to Hermann Goering, to Luftwaffe Field Division, and then back to Heer impression. There aren't any units where I live otherwise I would just go with what a unit would say, but since there isn't I do not know what to do.

Well if it is just for looks, I think the Algemeine SS had the best uniforms, but they weren't combat units to my knowledge. For Heer, I voted for M36. Early war stuff tend to be flashier and better looking since they had yet to experience the logistical problems of war at those stages.

I have been drifting towards the Heer M42 tunic from Hessen.

The M42 is a good choice. It isn't as late as the M43 yet not as early as the M40 or M36. I'd get them from Gavin Militaria, they are pretty much the same as Ant-z plus the prices are much better then Hessen Antique.

Is Gavin Militaria on EBay or is it a traditional website? I haven't been able to find it by looking on EBay or Google.

An M36 lets you do *any* year of the war. Later versions limit you obviously
If you want your moneys worth and a classic look- m36

M40s can be seen in pictures as early as 37. an M40 could also be used in any year.

I would be afraid the Gavin uniforms would be cheap pieces of junk for that price. Has anyone ordered from them before?

There aren't any units where I live otherwise I would just go with what a unit would say, but since there isn't I do not know what to do. Then in all honesty buy *books* not tunics. Read more, make a firm decision on what you want to do. It's too expensive a hobby to go into half assed... At the very least do this (something the wife always suggests)... Toss a coin to get an answer... if the coin toss suggets you an option you dont like then you actually find out what you really want to do

I'm confident that I want to do a Steiner impression from Cross of Iron, but I'm going to change it slightly. Here is what I'm going to get: ATF's M43 Tunic and Trousers M43 Field Cap AGM Mp-40 w/ 5 Magazines Mp-40 Magazine Pouches Y-Straps Bread Bag Canteen Zeltbahn Binoculars Mouse-Grey Winter Parka Combat Clasp in Bronze ( I'll wear only after I've earned it) Iron Cross 1st Class(Only after Ive earned it) Ostfront and Iron Cross 2nd Calss Medal(Only after I have earned them)
Once I get a unit started them I'll promote myself to NCO.

They had the same Feldgrau collar as the M40, same 5 button front. The difference was in the lining and placement of belt hook holes.

It is however... *far* too clean. For that real Alte Hasen look you need to bury your kit in the soil for a week, drag i out, vomit on it, cover it with a bit of pigs blood... roll around again and then sit in a sauna with it to get it properly sweat soaked.... bit too much effort for me like

Incidentally.... here's a pic of something that a lot of armchair experts will insist 'never happened'... its shoot from the well respected 'militaria' magazine (french edition i'm afraid). A panzer grenadier NCO in normandy with marching boots and m36 tunic... note I know is a recreation of the uniform but it's based on the guy in the black and white photos wearing exactly the same thing. You can't tell in that pic but in the gruppe taking cover in the ditch/fence line about 30 per cent of them have old patterns of kit, even the young lads.

From the rank of Unteroffizier and up, you can take your uniform to a tailor and have it customized or have one tailor made, especially being in France for 4 years!! This was more common for officers, but there were enough done that there are quite a few photos of them. Kern
