"Another revealed product from APS was their HA-1A Hades Arrow projectile launcher or mortar, with a 80m firing range. The fake mortar rounds themselves have rubber tips and metal fins; it will be interesting to learn more about this product as more information becomes available." A Mortar (I wish WW2 ) Would be a Good Thing for a Skirmish, Have a Mortar Team or something.

Hopefully Big Ed will bring his marvelous mortar and artillery tube to an event. They really work well, and pretty accurately shoot tennis balls, water balloons, and pebble shot. They really are a great addition to the skirmishes!

Eds mortars and assorted homebuilds are amazing and add a lot to every event he attends. The mortar with its tennis ball barrages are amazing. At a Nam event while serving with the NVA we were spotted approaching the fire base by a LRRP team which called in a fire mission. We had a steady stream of tennis balls raining in on us through the woods and one literally bounced off the pith helmet of one of my charges. Absolutely hillareous. I also enjoyed later on at the event listening in on the radio as a fire mission was called and the rounds fell short. "Cease fire! cease fire! Short Rounds! short rounds! Add 100!" (Wind does some interesting things to tennis balls fired high into the air!) They were literally calling in fire by grid coordinate! Very very cool.

The Ostfront crew has three mortars, all have been used in-game. A tremendously cool addition to any skirmish. I've found the best flying projectiles for my mortar are the JCS J69 rockets made for paintball...ultra stable flight virtually every time. I brought mine to Operation: Irene IX this year for use by the Somali Militia side and absolutely decimated an entire platoon of US forces. None of them had the foresight to ensure someone had a heavy weapon to take out a vehicle, which I was using as a mobile platform. I bracketed them with the first two rounds, then layed it on for effect. (according to OC's, I took out betwee 75 and 100 players) After the days action, one of the celebrity players, Msg. "Mad Max" Mullen, himself a former mortarman, told me he couldn't believe it as it was happening, because he had never seen a mortar used so effectively in an airsoft game! The following day, he would feel vindication as Rekkon had brought his mortar as well and was fighting with the US side, so he directed his fire to destroy a healthy bunch of militia.
Indirect fire heavy weaponry in Airsoft is a reality, an effective mortar can be built at Home Depot for less than $150.
I'm already scheming on towed artillery. Think mini-Nerf footballs leaving a rifled barrel. ;D

Outstanding. I think these supplemental "crew served" type weapons add a tremedous amount to our events and truly set them apart from typical airsoft skirmishes. I have built several recoiless rifles that launch nerf rockets and my son and I designed them to breech load with pre-done "shells." They fire a nerf rocket approximately 150 yards. Inside of 50 feet they are quite dangerous actually but I use them against vehicles or lob them as an indirect fire weapon. They resemble but are by no means a replica of a 57mm recoiless rifle. I needed the rear to be larger than the tube in order to facilitate the insertion of the prebuilt shells which consisted of a small section of tube (to house the nerf rocket) a ball valve, and the expansion chamber with a CO2 adapter behind. I always though it would make an excellent set up for either a howitzer or a Tank being breech loaded. The gunner aimed and called the command to fire. It is the loader who controls the ball valve so it truly is a two man weapon. (At least) The shells by themselves are almost completely ineffective as the Nerf roaket needs the channalized focus of the tube itself. A simple insert and twist set up firmed the round into the tube. There used to be small screamer valves on some Nerf rockets that created an awesome effect as they were falling to the ground but these versions have since been dropped from inventory by NERF for some reason or maybe I am not sourcing them properly. I think they were called "Howlers" They were wonderful.

Aye, I used my mortar to good effect at Irene. I have the Mil-Sim Labs rapid fire mortar. The name tells you why I got it. With a good 2-3 man crew I can crank out 10-15 rounds a minute, which means we can get another round out while the first one is still in the air. It is also small and light and thus extremely portable. Accuracy is good with JCS rockets, though I would like to look into making a new barrel to use tennis balls (cheaper ammo). The Irene camera crew loved our mortars. I am sure we will shot up on the DVD.
2nd Bat: Yes, they were called Howlers, and you can still find a few here and there. From what I gathered, they were discontinued because the whistles were hurting kid's fingers.

Redwolf emailed me this www.youtube.com/watch?v=x1E8-ATt5IgDefinitly doesn't look safe lol especially if that rubber cap isn't secured or damaged. The water spraying before the shell is in the air really sucks

The Hades Hokkatsu Mortar is pretty impressive. I like the fact that you detonate by dropping down the tube. I also like the fold out fins and size of the rounds. The tube itself is really hokey but it seems a simple housing with adjustable bipod could be easily built. I wonder if the burst discs are available seperately and if so for how much? Obviously to be fully functional you'd need a ready stock of pre prepped rounds and lots of replacement rubber discs. 100 yard range is not great but adequate for most airsoft application.

Anyone notice the round embedded 3-5 inches into the dirt? THAT is a potentially serious injury.
Not in my games.
