Hi all. This build was mainly inspired by the new short m14 mags by MAG (60rounds). I was bored and found a very cheap M14 for sale and i thought i'd go ahead and build a G43-alike. At first, i wanted to try to build an accurate replica of the G43, but because i couldn't find anyone that could make a stock from scratch for me (repro g43 wood stock will not be feasible), i just decided to build a cheap stopgap G43. This started out as a Cyma full length M14. Slightly reshaped the stock to look more G43-ish. Will continue reshaping. Carved out a top handguard out of scrap wood. Cut down the receiver until i had only the magwell and barrel attachment. Next, i actually made use of the plastic M14 top handguard to make the rear sight base and the receiver. With Sintra PVC board for details. Not an exact replica and not meant to be one. Again, just a stopgap until i have the means and materials to build a much more exact model. More to come.

Very clever and simple. Certainly an "at a glance " approximation. Keep us posted. A few more details and a good paint job and I think you're on to something.

Looks fantastic! I've wanted to do one for a while but I just lack motivation for these things anymore.

Looks good. I started a similar conversion a while back, but like most of my projects it ran out of steam and lies buried on the work bench. Maybe I should get a shovel and dig it up. ;D

Where can I buy sintra board? Ive read some of your builds and that stuff seems extemely handy.

This is going to be quite decent looking when the detail work is finished and it is all stained and painted. The infidelities are quite acceptable in my opinion and it fills a current void quite nicely until something commercial should come along.
The only logical course to keep costs down is to build one myself and your template provides inspiration to do so. The magazine is a little too close to the trigger guard of course but if you alterred the mag so it flipped around it would be too far forward. The tall front handguard gives an effective illusion that the barrel is lower which is clever and your slight tweaks to the lower stock really adds a lot. I am surprised the stubby mags stick down that far when seated? Thanks for tackling this and sharing your efforts.

@ soldatjakob - just came across it on ebay. Bid on it once but was outbid. But winner backed out, and was offered 2nd chance but offer was too high and i declined. Then it came up again for much much less, bid on it and finally won it. You just have to keep you eyes peeled, i guess. Updates: Modifying the stock: Front sight: Aaaaaand it's done: Unfortunately, i couldn't color match the plastic stock to the wooden handguard, but it still came out better than expected.

Looks like you finally got that G43 you wanted. Not matching the handguard to the stock isn't too big a deal. Assume they just came off of different guns and the handguard had to be replaced. It looks great. You're a gun craftsman.

I love the finished product. Straight forward, simple concept brilliantly executed and no doubt a solid reliable performer that clearly depicts the weapon it is supposed to represent. Thank you for sharing. You have inspired many and I am amongst them. I like the pseudo wood finish you created. The final finish work is always my favorite part. Did you actually route the leather sling through the butt stock? I was trying to imagine a way that could be represented but still allow the full interior area for battery?

Very nice. Skirmishable as any M-14 is and upgradeable. Me like. Another feather in your cap. You should be doing Italian Mountaineer impression with that cap. Those front bands are being reproduced. Fairly easy to p/u in the US and yes, it is going to be a future project when I have some time. www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.aspx?Item=331056660What did you make the muzzle nut out of?

ersatzjack2 - Thanks! 2nd Bat - Thanks! The most expensive part of the build was actually the repro front band at $45. But one could actually do without this part as well. Yep, the sling threads through the stock. I usually use lipos so i don't need much space for the battery, but i think with a little deft manipulation of the part of the sling inside the stock you can still stick a nicad in there. Ersatzjack - Thanks! I wanted to build something like what you and gryphon did, IMHO the most successful AEG g43 build to date. But i just didn't have the resources to do it. So this was the next best thing. @sgt.Tom - Thanks! Actually i followed your wood tutorial with the gel stain.

My most attractive pseudo wood finishes on plastic consists of painting the stock with a bright ochre (quite yellow ) acrylic paint using alot of paint and using a somewhat harsh brush so when it drys it leaves a "grain". Once dry I overspray with a "wood tone" overspray which comes in assorted shades WALNUT, OAK, Cherrywood, etc. Once that drys I do a light acrylic wash in thinned out black to emphasize the grains a bit and again once that drys I overspray with a protective dull coat sealer to create a more military stock finish than the glossy stocks you see on civilian sport rifles.
The effect is amazingly convincing and quite durable. I like that you chose a medium shade as it replicates what you most often see on the G43 in pictures although they also came in a darker finish as well for those who prefer that look.

Did you make the rear sight yourself? I'm extremely interested in attempting this as you can get these m14's so cheap..

Well done sir. Would you mind telling us how much the whole project cost?

@the Legacy - Yup, made the rear sight out of sintra board. The adjuster was from an AK47. Rekkon - I bought the M14 second hand (front sight was damaged) for $50, the 4 pcs of the MAG short mags cost me $40, and the front band cost me $45. The rest i already had on hand.

The MAG short mags work very well and hold 70 rounds (feed 66-67). They appear a little bit too short for the G-43 but that is easy to cosmetically fix and as you're doing it one can alter the appearance on the exposed side walls as well.

Just found a Matrix m14 for $40, Sintra board 3mm on eBay for $16. The bar is set quite high here but I'm going to give this my best!

Just curious if anyone built their rear g43/k98 sight out of sintra exactly how Jimmi did?
