For gas guns that do not use CO2 such as the Marushin M1 Garand would it be possible/practical to put a hand warmer inside the gun next to the gas reservoir? That way, the gas would be warm and expand even in cold weather. Is it possible and/or practical?

That has been discussed in the past and is a theoretically sound idea except there is no real place to pack hand warmers around the reservoir and disassembling and reassembling a Marushin M1 Garand in the field is a REALLY Bad idea. It is a you can do to keep the little screws and nuts loctited enough to stay together for 200 rounds as it is.

I recall seeing an APS2 many years ago that someone used a simple timing circuit and small incandesant bulb that provided sufficient heat. I can't find the link, but it was very compact and seemed to give good results.

I've tried it, most hand warmers use your body heat to keep the heat up on the pad, I've bought various different ones, such as the ones from Walgreens and Menards. They all claim that they will get to 100degrees or so, but not when they are exposed to the elements. Even the battery operated toe warmer I bought only got hot if it was enclosed within the boot.
