So I have a pair of HBT M43 pants but all of these loops and holes and buttons and straps have me dumbfounded. Can anyone help?

The only thing that might seem confusing would be the leg straps. These were added as paratroopers typically loaded up their cargo with items that needed additional support in a parachute jump. The straps further tied in the items which typicaly included grenades, ammo clips perhaps some c rations. Once on the ground the straps were often cut off or simply left dangling. Jump trousers also had buttons in the waist to secure trouser suspenders.

The things at the bottom go under your feet, inside your boots. The two pieces in the back can are for suspenders, as are the buttons on the inside sides. The straps on the sides on the outside are used to tighten the pants.

When the loops are left alone you can wear a waist belt instead of suspenders.
