I am assuming the litzen was sewn to the bottle green backing then sewn onto the collar?

If I'm correct, the bottle green backing was only used for the bottle green collar tabs for the "M36" tunic. Other uniforms were just sewn directly on.

Essentually true. It was far more common to see the backing on early war uniforms, but a the war went on, it would be seen less and less as it was an unneeded extra expense. As with all things WW2, you can see litzen sewn directly to bottle green collars, especially since these were actually issued throughout the war, and in reverse, you could see backed litzen on a later war wool tunic.
There is also a size difference in litzen. Early war was larger than late war, so that is something to keep in mind when building your tunic. If you want an early war look, go with the bigger, late war, the smaller is more common. Notice I say "more common" because again, you could very well see the large size on late war.
The uniformity of the German army is awesome isnt it?
