About a month ago, I took up an offer to build a VZ-24 bolt action rifle. The RS gun is actually a copy of the Kar98k, that was built in Czechoslavakia before the war, and utilized by the Wehrmacht after the country's invasion. The VZ only differs from the Kar, in that it has an upper handguard that extends past the rear sight to just in front of the reciever.
I recieved a used wood stock and barrel bands from the customer along with the guts of a Dboy 98k, and I aquired the Bar-10 for the internals. I didnt get any "in progress" photos, but I can show the end result.
Here is the finished gun minus the final paint work.
The bolt assembly uses the ring from the Bar-10 bolt handle, which was drilled and tapped to accept a steel rod replacement handle with the ball tip from the Dboys gun. The RS safety can be activated to lock and unlock the bolt handle. This was done with a notch on the top of the bolt ring and a peg underneath that engages the reciever when the bolt handle is in the lowered position. The Bar-10 safety is still present to prevent the trigger from being pulled.
The RS bolt catch was simply cut from the Dboys and glued on.
The Bar-10 outer barrel/reciever actually fit perfectly under the handguard. I cut two tabs just in front of the hopup unit, bent them in slightly, and attached the Dboys barrel to them, leving room for the hopup assembly to slide back and forth.
It may be hard to see in this image, but wher the stock and handguard meet, just below the rear sight, there is a slot that I cut to acess the Bar-10 hopup lever. Just insert a flathead or anything similar, and slide it back and forth until the hopup is set. No dissassembly required!
The rear sight is also taken from the Dboys gun, and is missing its leaf so a scope can be mounted.
The mag well was drilled out and chiseled to shape. I cut a notch for thd Bar-10 catch assembly, and mounted that in as a whole. I originally tried to mount it in using only the push button and slider, but there was too much friction and became stuck.
I finally added a piece of 1/8th" sheet steel just in front of the bolt area, to mimic the large reciever band. I then cut the opening larger and added the thumb cutout and stripper clip guide.
I am really happy with this build and I kind of hate to see it go, but I know its new owner will love it!
