I thought it would be pretty neat to have small units of guys that get panzer crew impressions, make themselves look like they were "shot out" and hook up with another actual unit to add to realism of a lost tank crew that found refuge with a german squad. Opinions?

It would be pretty neat...but odds are they would have been KIA in the tank when it was destroyed or, since the enemy was right there...killed when exiting the tank with small arms. There's always te exception though. I think it would be neater to take those guys in panzer uniforms and add them to your regular German unit hence making it bigger and better.

Ok, I was going to try to recruit around 3-4 guys for our tank crew unit. We are going to be from the same division and unit, just different tanks.

Mauser, I for one, would LOVE to be a part of a Panzer Tank Crew. If you and I lived closer to one another, I'd be right there with ya'!

Tank crew casualties Depend on allot of things. In ww2 a penetration of the Armour did not always result in 100% fatalities. tanks did not always "burn" or "Explode" Immediately upon being hit. it quite often would take a few moments for the fire to Ignite the fuel, or grow hot enough to set off the ammunition and "brew up" the tank.
If your a Tank crewmen, and you see flames, or hear the impact of a round followed by allot of smoke in the crew compartment, Chances are you aren't going to waste any time in bailing out. Most tank crewmen Know EXACTLY what they are going to do if there vehicle takes a hit. there going to get the frack out of Dodge. because becoming a crispy critter isn't exactly anyones life ambition!
It was not un-common to see dismounted tank crewmen fighting along side or as Infantrymen in ww2. Because once your feet hit the dirt, You aren't a tanker any more. Your a Grunt. because the enemy isn't going to stop shooting at you because your no longer encased in amour.
If you want an excellent description of what it was like to be a German Panzer crewmen in WW2, then I Have some EXCELLENT books to recommend at the end of my post.
But doing a Panzer crewmen armed with an MP40 and or a Pistol is an excellent Impression Idea.
PANZER BATTLES OF THE WAFFEN SS by German tank ace will fey.
TIGERS IN THE MUD by German tiger ace Otto carious. (This book is AWESOME.)
PANZER ACES by will fey.
This is an excellent series of books BTW.
also, try SONS OF THE REICH , the story of the 2nd SS Panzer corps.
All of them are great reads.

Hey Predator! Ben here. Thanks a bunch for your thoughts and ideas and of course, all your support on the "Panzer Crew" idea; we really appreciate you gettin' our back. I'd also like to mention that as for as the Panzer Crews out in the field is concerned, many of them participated in "recon" missions that took place on foot, believe it or not. A lot of them also supported the "Grenediers" as well, hopping in their motorbikes as well as the Halftracks. Lets face it; a Halftrack driver's not gonna' just sit there, in the driver's seat, twiddling his thumbs, and scratching his "toodles" waiting for the enemy to stop firing in his direction. So, there are lots of roles for the Crews.
