Did the panzer crewman have any steel helmets, and if so were they black or field grey? Did they have decals? Thanks-

My family in Deutschland says no. Some distant uncle was apparently some sort of Tank Commander. They just wore Side caps.

depends, inside the tank no, at ceremonies yes. on open top sp guns yes.
If your playing a dismounted crew (who's tank was destroyed) Id say no.

I see pictures with Strum crews wearing typical Fritz helmets and you often see pcitures with helmets attached to the outside of German tank turrets. Interesting because unlike US armored vehicles where everything seems to be tied on to the outside of the vehicles the Germans kept things generally tidy and neat. Clearly the crews had helmets available to them.

I would imagine they would have helmets available, should the time arise. And yes, the Germans, even at the strangest of times, have a habit of keeping things extremely tidy. Heck, they wore all of their medals and badges into battle. I suppose if yer gonna die, you gotta look good.

yes assualt gun crews sp guns, and anything open top did wear helmets, I thought the question was about panzers. There is no room for helmets inside a panzer. They would have been normal helmets, probably with less or no cammo work. -Gordak

If you've ever been in a tank (and I know Sam has alot!) you know that you get banged around quite a bit. I'm not particularly well versed on German uniform habits but I gotta believe some sorta padded head gear would be worn. Typically you just see them sticking their heads out with just those Panzer Berets or European garrison cap thingys. I've been thankful on many an occassion that I had a brain bucket on when travelling in a tank or APC.

The first version berets did had crash helmets in them, the beret was to make it look nice. Now only if they made those...

its totally ammazing, but after the panzer berets, the germans had a cloth helmet, (looked alot like the russian tanker helmets) these are very rarely in photos becasue they were wired in the vehicle, thus they never saw the light of day, But still these were unpopular, and just like the GIs who refused to wear their helmet chin straps, germans wore wool hats in the tank!!!!!!
yes there must have been head injuries, but honestly , once you get used to your crew position you get used to the way you get tossed around, so you can get away with it, but like i said, fassion vs practicality, and fassion won. so my vote is, dismounted panzer crew, would wear a wool hat, or a bandage on their head -Gordak

I just looked back at my book "Leichte, panzers in action" and I remembered all the great photos in it. I saw 2 pictures with about 4 steel helmets dangling from the tank turret while they were rolling. I also saw about 3 pictures with panzer crews wearing bloused jackboots! I still don't think I'll be wearing a helmet into combat but I think bloused jackboots should be acceptable.
