I really want a fixed bale (or bail, however it's spelled) helmet for my display. I've got a couple questions.
About how much would you spend for a decent condition fixed bale shell?
If I got one in rougher condition, how hard would it be to repaint/cork?
What kind of deals have you got on fixed bale's?
Any other input?

Shifty, I have a fixed bale I bought at a yard sale when I was about your age. Original paint, only drawback was half the chinstrap was missing. You can still make out the original price I paid written in crayon... "$1.00" I had two, I don't know where the second may be (I do recall that was missing the strap entirely), probably back at my mom and dad's house.
Kilroy, the days of helmets for a buck may be over, but yard sales or estate sales would still be a great place to look if you're not in a rush. I could imagine picking one up-- especially if it's in need of work-- for five or ten bucks. Estate sales especially might work, as many is the veteran who has his old "pisspot." Even if the organizers know what they have, it's likely to go below market.
