Were German greatcoats only used in the winter? Or did they use them year-round?

Well, keeping in mind that the German and European areas are much cooler than our areas here in the States, it is very possible that the Soldatan wore the coats more than we would. Although, if you ever had the opportunity to wear one, you'll quickly realize that the sheer weight of it, accompanied with the wool uniform, is tremendous, and very warm. All year round? Probably not, but more than 6 months outta' the year? Yeah, probably.

Don't forget that the Afrika Korps were issued greatcoats for those chilly desert nights.
