For anyone out there who is both handy and interested in a Russian impression, I just finished converting my spring SVD to an SVT 40 look alike. I decided on the SVD due to the similar shape and size to the SVT 40. The base gun is an A&K SVD spring rifle. It is a very nice gun with a metal barrel, sights, and dust cover. The rest is made from a durable and thick plastic. online they can be found for around $130. Here are the results: The stock was hand carved from a two inch thick pine board. Though one could carve it using the right power tools. I then took the original gas assembly and epoxied it further down the barrel. The gas shroud was made from a thin piece of sheet metal. First holes were drilled into it with a drill press. While there are more holes on the original gas shroud, I went with less for the sake of structural stability. One could easily drill more. Then I bent it and epoxied it to the barrel. The rest of the gun uses original parts from the base rifle. While not a perfect replica by any means, I would say that it does the job. It would be a good project for someone with some skills in woodworking and metalworking. It currently shoots hard and is an accurate mid range gun. Outside that, some BB's seem to want to curve ever so slightly even with the hopup all the way off. When they do fly straight, however, they are spot on accurate. I will try cleaning the barrel to see if that helps.

Awesome job! It definitely does the trick... if I were playing German and engaged a Soviet trooper carrying that, it would certainly scream "SVT40" at me. I wish there were people who did Soviet in this part of the world, an Ostfront game would be insane.

Awesome work! How much would something like this cost?

Aldrich,
Your dillegence for detail continues to impress! This looks just like the real deal and what Nightwitch was thinking of over on MOA Did you post this over there? With respect, Fritz

Thanks for the compliments! I did post this over on the MOA forums and sent Nightwitch some advice on how to construct one. Hopefully we will have two SVT's in the MOA family soon.

LSSAH1944: The cost largely depends on the spring SVT. I have seen the A&K SVD's go for $80 on sale. Outside that it simply comes down to the 2" thick board for the stock, and a sheet of metal for the gas cover. That, and a lot of patience carving the stock!

A quick update on this gun. After a bunch of tweaking, I have gotten it closer to where I want it to be. Still not spot on, but just what I intended it to be. Pics:

That really does the job nicely. You mentioned that it is a hard shooter. What would you estimate the FPS at with .20 gram? The receiver group cover appears perhaps to be from an m14 handguard?
In looking at the project a similar effort creating aa pseudo G43 seems doable?

The receiver is from the original gun. I actually have not chrono'd it so I am not really sure what it is shooting right now. While a g43 build may be possible with this gun, it would require far more modification than what was required for this build. I would recommend going with the quick m14 build by Jimmoroqai.

I would be curious to see what the removed springer guts looked like outside of the original (now modified housing). If you decide to do another or if you disassemble this one for some reason I,D love to see it.
Your project really came out nice and is very inspiring. Nice that you,re using more substantial guts than Gryphon's shotguns for his Mosin carbine. I need to come up with something cheap and reasonably doable to arm my German opfor. The cheap springer carbines are my current solution working around a few MP 40s and two MP 44s.
Eventually I'd like an MG 42 and something to fill in as Kar 98 S for the bulk of the force.
