I keep on seeing this scarf on German soldiers and officers and on some loadouts on here, like this one from Gadge and I am wondering what it is.

Its a scarf. There was a military issue grey wool scarf, but in the picture, its just a white scarf.

It's an ascot. It was both a fashion item, and practical. Some soldiers would wear them to keep the wool uniform from chafing their neck.

Scarves were a practical and commonly worn accessory that adds a bit of flare and increased comfort for your uniform. Fallsimjager troops often wore a navy bluee with polka dots scarf while US airborne troops quite often fashioned scarves out of cuttaway sections of the silk camo parachutes as a sign that they had made a combat jump. (cutting up a parachute at training jumps is generally frowned upon). In winter while there were issued scarves soldiers often fashioned them from wool blankets they cut up. I really like the detail and finished appearance a scarf provides and when positioned properly the additional protection they can provide against BBs.

OK, that explains something. My uncle was in the 101st (killed in January 1945). There was a piece of camouflage parachute silk at my grandmother's that came back with his personal effects. I bet he'd been using it for a scarf.

They also fashioned hammocks out of sections and shade. If there was a small section of camo parachute it no doubt was used as a scarf. The camo scarf was a big prestige item as theonly ones likely to have them had conducted a combat jump. Very cool keepsake Volks.
