Hello,
I've been seeing pictures of Navy Corpsman wearing their rank insignias in WWII photos, but I can't seem to get anything certain. I've seen ones that are tan/khaki or OD back with black stripes and designs, same thing but with a red cross, ones that are like the USMC Service Alpha jacket rank insignia, with the OD border and design with red background.
The wife really wants to get some rank on her impression, especially since she is going to pick up Petty Officer soon (yes, in the real Navy, haha).
Thanks!

What is her Rating? I'll presume we're not going for 100% accurate, her being female and all? At that time, split-tail non-deployables were limited to Hospital Corps (cross insignia), or Nurse's Corps (Cadeucus with "N" superimposed). Is she a HN (Hospitalman)? That would be the Cadeucus. Corpsman? RED cross. Pharmacist's Mate? GOLD cross.
As to the color of the rating badge, it should match the uniform. Khaki should be worn (oddly enough) on the khaki uniform, normally worn by CPO+ (E-7 and up), shore stations only. Greens (OD Working Uniform) are for Seaman Recruit (E-1) through First Class Petty Officer (E-6), with the exception of Naval Mobile Construction Batallions ("Seabees"), where they were worn by ALL ranks when deployed, including officers. Black with red chevrons (or gold chevrons for 12+ years "of good behavior") go on the Winter Working Blues, or Winter Dress Blues ("Crackerjack Uniform"), and are ONLY worn on shore duty, or in a ceremonial role (but NOT when "lining the rails"), Oct 1 to Mar 31. White with black chevrons go on the Summer Working Whites, or Summer Dress Whites, worn ONLY on shore duty or when aboard ship in a ceremonial role (including "lining the rails"), Apr 1 to 30 Sept. Aboard ship (or when deployed ashore and ordered as working uniform of the day) for E1-E6, Dungaree uniforms bore a light blue background (to blend into the chambray workshirt), with Navy Blue chevrons and device. Note: Until 1948, the Dungaree uniform DID bear the rating badge with the rank chevrons, however AFTER 1948, wearing of rating badge on chevrons was proscribed by many commands.

Actually, I should have been more clear. This is for the field Corpsman that rolled with the Marines. Obviously none of this is 100% since females on the front line wasn't a thing until recent years. But she would be reenacting a Field Corpsman; P41 uniform, M1 Carbine, Medic gear, etc etc.
Her specific rate is no where near Corpsman, but her rank will soon be E-4. Which would transistion to "HM3- Hospital Corpsman 3rd Class" (modern day) and "PhM3c - Pharmacist's Mate 3rd Class" (during late WWI and WWII).

If she's representing the Hospitalman 3rd Class, she should wear the OD green, with black crow, chevron and cadeucus. If PM3, OD green with black crow and chevron, with gold cross.
