I did a search on this, and I didnt come up with anything. Anybody have any experience with any of the Cushman helmets? I remember feeling a couple, and being very unimpressed - too plasticky and bendy. However, I was just browsing their website and it looks like they have some new ones out. This time they are made out of .90 plastic instead of .60 - anyone have any experience with them? www.cushmanpaintball.com/GermanHelmetPage.htmlThey are very affordable, so I have been thinking about getting one. Anybody know a good way to strengthen it? I was thinking maybe covering it in paper mache, and then rubbing rubber cement over it.

I wouldn't buy them, there's so many better, less Flaggrantly Wrong alternatives. Buy a spanish helmet and put a cover on it.

molds? the spanish helmet is not a German helmet at all. They just have a similar shape, and yes we can see a spanish helmet from a million miles away. -Gordak

Ok, I thought the Germans had given their helmet molds to the Spanish, and the Spanish in turn had modified them. I guess I was mistaken.
Anyways, Cushman...

I am probally one of the few to have this opinion but, A Cushman helmet is a start. Once you get more into it you will plop down the 100-150 for a real steel replica probally but the Cushman one will get you through a few games. I'm not sure if one of the covers will fit over them but that would help. The Nylon chinstraps is a dead giveaway though. You could lay strips of fiberglass over it sand it a little paint it and trim it up with a dremal if you wanted to go to all that trouble. If it were me I would get one and use it as is for a few months save up some extra cash and go with a steel replica. There are no alternatives especially for FJ that I know of. It is real steel replica or plastic.

It is diffucult to get it looking just right by cutting down a heer helmet. Certainly possible. No one in Battlesims group is going to down him for the Cushman. Different standards same with us donw here.

I have a friend with one of the newer ones it is thicker feeling but more rubber like to me. Hard to explain. It feels softer yet thicker.

I got six of them for a movie I produced once, and just stabbed holes in them (They were for dead Germans) and they worked extremly well for that!

They actually look pretty good from a distance, as they were cast of an original. M35-M42 repro covers fit the Cushman's helmets, but obviously do not cover the chinstrap.

yep from a distance of 20 feet or so...which is how far you will probally be as most groups don't allow hand to hand combat you will not be able to easily tell real from plastic the dead giveaway is the nylon chinstrap which does in my opinion look horrible...It could be pretty cheaply fixed I imagine.

They're not to bad.... We bought them as a cheap alternative for our paintball unit, the fabric cover fits them as do nets here they are at Skirmishes Invasion of Normandy this past July (thats me in the Middle) They sure saved my head from a lot of knots that weekend! LOL Grab some bicycle helmet inserts so it will sit right on your head.

Clearly not for the stick nazi thread but IMO a cheap start toward the addiction we all have. As has so many times been said, I'd rather hook some one affordably and have them show up looking reasonably okay from 20 feet and get them going down the road toward the impressions we all are striving for then not show up at all due to the intimidation factor of a bunch of snobs or the daunting expense of a full and proper impression. These guys would be welcome to any of my events (sans the stupid looking painball guns) and I'm confident within a year they'd be standing tall and still have the great smiles on their faces.
The good news about the cushman helmets is their so flimsy they'll only last for a few games anyway so when they get replaced hopefully it'll be with a decent replica or a field cap.
I did some US helmets and reinforced them with a thin layer of bondo and sprinkled sand into the paint. I did them up as hand out medic helmets and MPs and aside from the light weight I honestly don't think too many people noticed. I got rid of the black nylon chin straps although I kept the cheap plastic clips and simply attached then to some decent looking khaki webbing. They went over helmet liners and have held up reasonably well.
They work fine for loaners and one of the ways you can dramtically boost your event size is by having reasonable loaner impressions available for folks who just want to come to a game and see if it's for them. It's certainly been a formula that has worked well here in the NW.

You can find repro steel helmets from ebay: search from some seller like spearhead and others. I have some friends that have bought them and (i have also bought one but from www.paratrooper.fr but I think they are the same) they are really well made. Bye!!!

As a side note, www.paratrooper.fr is the store in the Deadmans Corner museum near Carentan. Von Der Heydte was holed up in the building, and it was used as an aid station I believe. I went there this summer, very cool museum and store! I believe the helmets carried by www.paratrooper.fr are made by Sturm.

The thicker .90 plastic is actually quite an improvement ande as mentioned the material seems to have changed as well. The current ones are definitely more durable then the incredibly flimsy original ones.
For getting stared or for loaner items these do represent an affordable temporary alternative. A reenactor might spot them from a mile away but a veteran wouldn't notice beyond 20 feet.
